Exhaust

Not wanting to spend a ton of money on a new exhaust. Whats the downside to putting in a magnaflow performance muffler (maybe 4x9") and having it custom made using the stock tips? I cant imagine it would sound bad. other than it not looking OEM whats would be the issue with it?

IMO, Muffler delete, catless DP, I guess u can leave the resonator on because that's what I did (I was worried about it being too loud so I didn't mess with the resonator)... But honestly not really any drone at all and I daily drive my M235i. Anyway it sounds AMAZING and it's CHEAP!

i was thinking about going that route, but my wife really isn't a fan of loud cars. My last car - A4 3.2 had a full exhaust (which wasn't even that loud) and she hated it.

I would just like a little more growl, nothing crazy, which is why i don't want to spend $1000+ on a full system.

Everyone is suggesting this option...

Very interested to hear what it sounds with res delete... Catless is illegal in aus

Res delete will be the cheapest option. It does increase the sound minimally.

I did a 3in Y-pipe. Kept the resonator on. Cold starts are loud but once the car warms up it sounds similar to the stock exhaust.

Catless is illegal pretty much everywhere, 2Banger. Doesn't stop anyone unconcerned with emissions testing, resale value, warranty, and/or the occasional (actually, more than occasional) fuel smell ... I guess those guys figure they'll crash the car before having to move on to the next ride ...

As for muffler delete: There are cars sold stock without a muffler (The Alfa Romeo 4C and the Fiat 500 Abarth come to mind) that pass sound tests primarily through engine management software. BMWs aren't among those, though the N20/26 is a fairly quiet engine even without a muffler using the comfort mode ECU map because the revs stay low, and because sound tests are based on idle and moderate low-speed acceleration. It's definitely a viable option, though again: resale value, warranty issues, and (potentially, but not very probable) emissions could be affected.

Start with catless downpipes then you can decide how much louder you want your car to be,

Wait. What? Start with the most illegal exhaust mod you can perform that also makes the least difference in sound?

Let's be frank here, since you're a commercial member: The N20/26 in the 228 has both an intake system and an exhaust system that are about as free-flowing as possible out of the factory. It's already common knowledge that aftermarket intakes do nothing power-wise, and any gains from an exhaust must come from removing the cat -- and even then the gains are minimal at barely more than 1 percent of stock power, coupled with a tune.

So we're talking exclusively about changing sound through an exhaust. Where does sound come from? Primarily the muffler system from the midpipe back. All removing the cat would do is make whatever is inherent sound-wise (i.e., already present) louder. So why would you start with the cat and DP -- an illegal mod on road-legal cars -- when changing the sound is the goal of most? That's like amplifying a clean acoustic guitar tone when an electric guitar tone is what is wanted ... ?

these are all great options, but no one has answered the original question. What is the difference with all of these other catback systems that are $1000+ opposed to a custom mounted magnaflow muffler. I know you'd lose the valve control option, but is there any other reason that it wouldn't be the same thing as a $1000+ option for 1/4 the price?

I started with a DP and axle-back exhaust from AA and it was loud. Loved the throaty sound, but way too much for a cab. I have since re-installed the OEM DP and the sound is now what I want, still belches and has great run-overs.

The custom DP did add a "special" sound and I wish I would have tried that first with the oem muffler...curious.

I have a Fabspeed Motorsport's sport cat downpipe with their brand new muffler delete system and it's absolutely fantastic. Couldn't ask for more and priced attractively with different exhaust tips to choose from. Give them a call and ask for John Brandenberger, he was the specialist that helped me out.
