Large items on roof racks

I've seen discussion on using the BMW roof rack for bikes but I was wondering if anyone has used the roof rack for any large items such as surfboards or standup paddle boards?
I'm curious how stable the load is or if it is even advisable?
Thanks in advance.

SUP's may be a problem. I put mine on my Jeep Wrangler with no problem but would never put it on a 2 series. They are long (11-12') and the roof is short.

I have pics of mine with a cargo box around this forum somewhere. No issues at all. Can't imagine surf boards being much different.

I haven't put a rack on the 228, but in my past experience with those, the big issue was weight (I suppose real long stuff like boards would also require some way to keep them from becoming an airfoil too, since I doubt the racks are that secure from lifting if there is real up-force on them. If you haven't driven with weight up high before you should take some time to get used to it - it is no accident that you pay a thousand bucks for a suspension that lowers center of gravity by less than an inch; moving it the reverse direction, with that high moment of inertia, can provoke some 'interesting' handling behaviors - may want to wrap the doorhandles with painters tape .
