Stupid question: What happens if you press "P" when car is moving?

I know this is a stupid question, but I've always wondered what would happen it you press the "P" button on the shifter when the car is moving... Would it be smart enough to do nothing?

...And what if you pull the electronic parking brake button (on models that have those) when the car is moving.

Haven't tried the brake, but did try the P while moving. Does nothing as you would expect and I suspect the same thing would happen if you pulled the brake.

On our Mk 7 Golf R with electric parking brake, the rear brakes will come on quite aggressively when the switch is held in the "up" position while on the move, but the wheels don't lock (at least on dry or wet surfaces, haven't tried it on snow).

Creeping into a parking spot (prob 1 MPH) and inadvertently pressed park. Like slamming brake on (everybody kiss the windshield) LOL

The electrically controlled e-brake on newer BMWs will apply braking force to make a .5g stop, if memory serves. (I might not have the g force correct, but it puts the anchor out without locking up.) This was discussed at a BMW CCA instructor seminar not too long ago and the answer was provided by BMW executives. Parking lot testing confirmed it - a forceful slowing as long as the lever is pulled up. No advice on hitting the P button, but I'm not trying it!

Sounds like someone is wanting to make a YouTube video of this in hopes of a striking it rich but first wants to make sure he doesn't break his car

Pressing P at low speeds latches immediately to no good effect. I wouldn't want to try it at any real speed and i hope it's locked out.

It's called a parking pawl. Lots of fun in a car that has a lever to put the car in park. Makes an awesome sound!!!

Does nothing at speed, but at crawling speed will bring the car to an abrupt halt.

I have done this a few times. I stop the car at the mailbox, which is at the end of our driveway. Instead of turning off the ignition, I put the car in park. If I am not careful, the car may still be going 1 or 2 mph. Under those circumstances, the car comes to a very quick stop, as if I have hit a wall. Over the years, I have done this less and less but no apparent harm to the car's innards.
I don't know what the cut-off speed is for engaging park, but I shudder to think what would happen if it did so at more than a couple of mph.

Also the same thing will happen if you try to open the door while slowly moving... car will go into park

I get the inadvertent automatic parking engagement when I want to creep the car forwards or back a bit in the garage, and I have the door open. Like when I move the car onto a 2x6 scrap to raise it enough to get my old jack under the car. Super annoying.

Basically, if the door is open, and the brake is fully released, Park is automatically engaged. And it is a really abrupt stop. Like you hit something. I thought I had the first time it happened.

One workaround in the garage is to put on the seatbelt. That lets you release the brake with the door open and creep a bit without Park engaging. But get over a very low speed creep, and Park still engages. With a bang.

Or, you can close the door. But I like to leave the door open as it's way easier to judge if I only want to move a few inches.

Don't have this issue on my beloved 6MT.

There's videos of people abusing parking pawls. On this one you can see the car engage the pawl but it clicks past the ratchet point.

There is a simpler work around this and guaranteed to work no matter the distance. I use this especially if I’m moving the car to a lift or something. What you do is open the door, on the locking mechanism push the part in twice as if you are programming the car and voila, the car thinks the door is locked and will not engage park, this is done during programming because otherwise the window lift on that door won’t do its calibration thinking it might hurt someone, you will move freely as you wish with your door open, just don’t forget to pull the door lever twice before closing it

Nothing happens at freeway speed. I tried it. Multiple times. You're welcome.
