Z4 M40i tested

I'm probably in the wrong forum but the topic does relate a bit to the current M240i xdrive engine-wise. I'm not a numbers geek, but it bothers me when the numbers don't add up:

By the numbers, the new Z4 M40i falls into a bit of a gap in the market: 0-60 mph takes 4.4 seconds, top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, and the 3.0-liter turbo six generates 382 hp (at 5,000-6,500 rpm) and 369 lb-ft of torque (from 1,600-4,500 rpm).

BMW says 4.8 sec with the four-banger Z4, so the 3.0 has gotta be faster than Automobile's road test. Z4 is no heavier than M240i xdrive and got 50 more horses, so gotta do better than my car's 4.2. And this assumes BMW has suddenly gone straight with its underrated blown sixes, which I tend to doubt. As we know by dyno testing, the B58 in the M240i is underrated by about 34hp.

As far as I know, BMW hasn't come out with numbers for the Z4 3.0 yet, but could be wrong? Thanks!

Does seem a bit off, but maybe Automobile's test had poor conditions that resulted in slower times. I'm thinking even having DSC on could limit the full output of the car, so unless the test was done with DSC off by a very skilled driver in perfect conditions, it's probably not going to do so well being that it's still a RWD car with a lot of power.

Does BMW provide an official 0-60 time yet?

As Autombile tested the Z4 in Portugal, it is likely a European Z4 M40i. To meet EU6 regulations the European spec car uses the B58B30M1 engine with 250kW (335 BHP), the same spec as the B58B30M0 engine used in the M240i. In countries not subject to EU6 regulations the car will have the B58B30O1 engine with 285kW (382 BHP). The EU6 regulations are presenting major problems to all manufacturers and look set to change the traditional trend of Euro spec cars having more power than US spec cars.

I’m assuming the Automobile journalists weren’t aware of this difference, as I didn’t see it when I scanned their article.

Automobile Magazine is a joke when it comes to proper road testing. They're more of a grand touring type of tester, with a bunch of subjective opinions. There are no quarter mile numbers or any other hard data on the car per their "test".

And let me drop an excerpt from the article:

Even when populated by 12-plus feet and 450-plus pounds of human, the Z4 feels, dare I say it, roomy—for a two-seat, open-top sports car, anyway.

That right there tells you they had some major extra weight in the car for the "test". In fact, the 4.4 seconds was probably timed by the (ahem) slightly heavy passenger on his iphone stopwatch, no less. Put a 175 lb driver in the car, instead of a 225 lb driver and a 225 lb passenger and all else being equal, you just shaved 2/10 off the 0-60.

Don't read into their article too much. I'm sure Car & Driver will have the car posting some stout numbers. I'll guarantee it's faster than a stock M240i. I bet the numbers will slot somewhere right in between the M240i and the M2 Competition.

Makes sense. I don't subscribe but get their online content, which is often lacking in data. Thanks.

It would be more relevant to compare it to an 8AT, RWD M240i than your AWD version.

AWD BMWs are listed to have faster 0-60 times compared to purely RWD models. BMW states the M240i coupe is 4.4 to 60, and the vert is 4.5 to 60. AWD takes a millisecond (or two in the coupe's case) off of the time due to greater traction. So the M240i vert and Z4 M40i seem to compare pretty well.
