240 oil change, time vs mileage
My 2017 M240i was purcased almost 2 years ago and only has 8000 miles. Zero problems but a little concerned about no oil change. Called service rep a year ago and he said 10,000. Miles is miles and time is time i guess.

After that, the dealer started calling to ask me to make an appointment for an oil change, and they referred to the mileage that was in the service message on my dash. The dealer is in Louisiana, and they know that I live in Ohio. I get the feeling that I need to go into the local dealer and find out how this aspect of the car works. I'm used to going to dealers only for warranty work, but this car is a whole nother level of...SERIOUSLY!?! The car was manufactured on 5/17/2017, so the oil had been in the engine for 14 months when the message first popped up. I did have the oil changed at 1,972 miles, but I haven't had the service message reset yet - or whatever it is you're supposed to do with it. Going forward, I'll change the oil at least every 5K. The next change will be in late October at around 5K, and I'll probably change it again in the spring. As little as I drive it mileage-wise, it's always going to have fairly fresh oil in it.

I have a 2014 M235 with only 14,000 miles in 51 months, I got a free oil change every year at the dealer with a little over 3,000 miles between each service. Its 1 year or 10,000 not 10,000 only.

I had mine changed after the first 2000km and plan to do it every 7500km. Mechanic ripped apart oil filter and showed me the metal fillings which is normal on a new engine. Get er done..... ; )

Come on its your car and you're clearly concerned. Two years is a long time. Push for it. In an alternate universe where they wouldn't pay for it I'd pay for it myself just to get it done.

^^^ Exactly. My 2014 M235i is also 51 months old, but only has 10,000 miles on the clock. Still, I get the oil and filter changed every 12 months, plus anything else that needs attending to. Car still looks and smells like new!

My ‘17 M240 SAYS 10,000 miles OR August, which is the month I took delivery. So it doesn’t seem it should be discretionary on the part of the dealer. I just had my second oil change, 18k Miles but 24 months.

Read all the above; my car was manufactured in Oct '16, and when I stopped in at the dealer a couple of months ago with ~4000 miles, they told me it needed an oil change. After that I participated in an undercarriage inspection session at a local indy; They told me to have both oil and filter changed every 5000 miles. Message received. "cheap insurance"

I have owned many high mileage cars built by manufacturers far less competent than BMW. Got most of them well used. Most people have similar experience so my experience is magnified by that. Engines are better than ever and oil is too.
My first car (1950 Ford flathead) had oil related problems. So did my second car (1960 Ford Falcon). Other than that, oil related problems are uncommon IME. I'll go with the manufacturer's recommendations. If you're paranoid (or use your car very hard) you can waste money on oil changes more often. |

Oil becomes acidic over time, and that is bad for your seals and such.
Here is a great article about oil aging. It's not just about miles. http://www.kewengineering.co.uk/Auto...egradation.htm |

There is some kind of wear-factor built in, 10k is just the default but it shortens it for harder driving. Mine has told me I needed one in between about 6 and 9 (plus those I added - I don't go more than 5k between, cause I'm paranoid and love shelling out money for peace of mind). OP should be due a change just by the date (yearly), unless he didn't get the maintenance plan (heard it isn't transferrable these days?)
And FWIW I'd always recommend a break-in change within the first 2k miles if you can; better-than-factory maintenance is also a great value-adder come sales time. |
