Can't really tell if ASD is there or not. Anyone else feel the same?

Maybe I don't have enough seat time yet (a mere 1500 miles), but I've coded ASD off and then back on again and just can't hear ASD working. Car is a m240i LCI. I remember ASD being super loud and fake sounding in the F80 M3 I was a passenger in during my Performance Center delivery experience.

If you have a 2er, please list your model year, whether it's a 228i, 230i, m235i, m240i, and whether you can distinctly hear it working or not. If you can hear it, can you also explain at what RPM range it kicks in?

I'm trying to determine if there is any type of pattern to suggest that BMW might have done a software update somewhere along the way to either tone ASD down or eliminate the effect completely.

Thanks in advance!

just start the car, leave it in park....throttle up to constant 2500 rpm and switch from comfort to sport and viceversa every 2-3 seconds.... you will hear car get louder and quieter

'18 230i, coded out ASD, can't say I noticed a difference.
Based on what I have read in other threads it seems they toned down ASD on LCI.

My attempt at humor missed the mark...tough room!

More bluntly.....I have never noticed ASD as I'm tuned in to other sounds.

In my experience it creates a sort of ambience that isn't quite real. It's not like VROOM VROOM coming out of the speakers. I coded it on and off a few times, decided I liked it off.

I have a convertible. It was far more obvious in the 4 series I drove as a loaner one time. Really sounded fake.

MAAAAAAANNNNNN, I can't here nothing. I have the 2018 M240i M Performance Edition 6MT and my car is quiet. People driving near me say they can hear the car but I can barely hear anything.

2017 240i 6MT. I cannot hear the ASD at all. I know it's there only because people on this forum say it's there, otherwise I would have never known.

Thanks for the input. Seems I'm not alone in my selective deafness to ASD. I've also gathered that it's not only LCI cars if F22_Matt's car is a pre-LCI 2017 m240i.

Seems another common theme in the "Nope, it's not there" camp is MT. Anyone with a 8AT convinced it's not there either?

The car IS quiet. Sorta. When I let my wife drive it I can hear it burbling away down the block and around the corner. Same when she's returning. But when I'm driving it it's sooo quiet. If I put down the windows and listen I can hear it but it's nothing visceral. And that's with the Performance Exhaust. One of my minor gripes with the car.

Yes, exactly. I can tell in certain situations that the car sounds glorious from the outside (without being obnoxiously loud), but it's like the interior doesn't let it come through enough. I'm sure it's all the sound insulation they put in these things...

Right after break-in was complete, I coded ASD off, however now that I am more familiar with the car as far as how it sounds through redline, I've come to the realization I want more noise. Hence, me coding it back on and now wondering why there is no difference.

It actually has me thinking about the MPE or some type of mild exhaust mods, but your comments here are making me doubt whether the MPE alone would be enough.

MPE + resonator delete? I have some more thinking to do.

The resonator delete alone made a big difference. Maybe not to the point of transforming the car but definitely makes the sound match the rest of the driving experience.

I can't hear mine either. I definitely noticed in the test drive though which was an auto-tragic. I really thing the 6MTs its either not there, or much less noticeable for whatever reason. Buy hey, I'm not complaining!

BTW, I have the ASD removal harness if anyone wants it... ha. Tried putting it in and couldn't get the dang clips to work. Gave up since I couldn't notice the ASD anyways and put it all back together.

The ASD system is very noticeable when you code it off..
I recently did this with bimmercode and do not regret it at all, music sounds better and you can actually hear the real engine/exhaust.

Every morning starting up in the garage with the windows and moonroof open it sounds great! But get into the outside air ... Even when driving in canyons with the rock walls close by to reflect sound doesn't really do much.

My sense is that if the volume is increased so that I can hear it nicely inside the car it'd be totally obnoxious outside, given how loud it currently is for people outside the car.

It's there on my 2017. I hear not an increase in volume but an increase in rumble/bass sounds when I flip to sports mode - you have to be listening for it. one of these days I'll get the bypass kit.

When you start the car in the morning, only one exhaust pipe is open and it sounds louder. it also sounds louder because the garage acts as an amplifier and resonator. Once you get out of the garage, you lose the amplification/resonation and after a minute or two the second pipe kicks in. So voilą, your car is much quieter.
Happens every morning!

The ASD unit is located in the trunk next to the stereo amp. You can't just unplug the ASD unit since it's tied into the stereo and other electronic systems of the car, so you have to bypass it. A bypass kit/harness consists of a specially wired plug that replaces (i.e., bypasses) the ASD unit. They are available from a few outfits such as Bimmertech.
