m235
Looking for comments good and bad on the M235. My son has been looking for a replacement for his 335i that was totaled a year ago when an individual hit him in the rear while he was stopped at a red light. Oh, the individual admitted not pay attention and was driving a F 250 going apron 45 MPH if my son had not been in a German car I would most likely not have him nor would my grandchildren have a father.
So It is my impression that the M235 was the car that evolved into the M2. How does it compare and did it have weak points that he should be aware of Thanks |

I had an M235i for four years. Nice daily driver car. It doesn’t have the power or road hugging capabilities of an M2, but it will handle better than his old 335i.
Never had a single maintenance problem either. There are no serious weak points but I did switch to a square wheel and tire setup (BBM CH-Rs with Michelin A/S 3+ 225/40/18s). |

OP: do some reading. The 2-series is one of the best reviewed models of any car in the last decade. The choice between engines and set-up depends on what you plan to do with the car. The M2 is great except for the ride, which almost all reviewers regard as harsh and so is not a great daily driver. For me, the 6-cylinder is a great compromise between speed/handling and comfort, especially with the adjustable suspension. My 2015 M235 is so good I have no thoughts of getting another car except maybe a new one identical to it except for the updates.

We have both--2013 335i and 2016M235ix. No comparison unless you need 4 doors.
Even my wife notices the difference in the 2 cars. M235 is a great car. Zero problems. |

Be aware this is a fast car, and you are giving a child a missle.
you already gave him a 335, so... You can find a 235 cpo or used for a great price, mid 30s. Easy to tune if you read this board. Great brakes. Havent had really any issues with it other than pot holes breaking struts (which just happened again on other side) and random hose breaking. Not the cheapest car for maintenance and insurance. Wont be competitive in any autox class. Super fun on track over taking cars 3x the price. PPL will say "its not a real m car"....

Glad he survived. could have been worse. How old is he. I am thinking the M2 might be a little too dangerous and expensive if he is a younger guy. The M235 would be a better choice. I have a 228ix MSport and it is a lot of car. You could get one cheaper than a M235 and feel more at ease with him driving it. Just my perspective. I have kids too.

weak points : a) some people have complained of drivers side seat bolster wear or leather seat wear. b) some people complain of Michelin Pilot shoulder rapid wear on front tires. c) charge pipe cracks and blows off its fitting. d) no spare tire 18-wheels susceptibility to potholes. e) stock radio and base idrive display kind of weak. f) drive hard or a little too enthusiastic and rapid fuel consumption.
strong points: a) build quality. b) six-cylinder engine extremely good. c) manual transmission, excellent automatic. d) handling, acceleration, braking, refined cruiser. d) strong air-conditioning. |

I bought a used 2015 m235 last year. Amazing car. Would have bought an M2 if they came in AWD. But from what I hear the drive on the M2 is much harsher and there is very little speed difference in the two since they both use the same engine.

I hear you about being the car guy. I serve that role for the extended family and circle of friends. My last achievement was convincing my sister-in-law not to buy an Alfa. But it is so beautiful, she said! Yeah, and so are a lot of other high-maintenance fragile objects in this world.

Does over 300 combat missions and then tours teaching air to air count . And I actually flew the one pictured and only five of us were authorized to fly her. Low and fast into North VietNam as a single ship hunter killer . What a great bird
