Anyone ever had a pilot bearing go? 6MT

I think mine is on its way out. It's wining in gear, rpm dependent. Does it in every gear. The second I clutch in, it stops.

Dealer replaced my clutch and flywheel about a month ago. It seems like too much of coincidence. Would they have installed a new pilot bearing when they did the flywheel?

It is very common to replace the pilot bearing when replacing a clutch because you are already 95% of the way there and it's a good precautionary measure.

That was my thinking too. I guess the new one that bmw installed must be faulty.

The pilot bearing will only spin when the clutch is pushed in / disengaged, when out or engaged the flywheel and gearbox input shaft are coupled by the clutch and the pilot bearing doesn’t spin. I would look more towards a problem with the clutch release bearing, as the

Wouldn't clutch release/ throw out bearing act the same? I've only heard throw out bearings make noise while operating the clutch.

I read up on bearings in the trans and now I'm leading towards the input shaft bearing. Another symptom is noise while in neutral. I can hear little clacks randomly while the car is idling and I have the door open in quiet places.

I should have titled it "which bearing is going bad?" Haha

It could be the input shaft bearing, especially if when the transmission was removed it wasn’t properly supported and it’s weight was put on the input shaft, causing bearing damage or bending of the input shaft.

I also wouldn’t rule out the release / throw out bearing, as BMW (along with most other manufacturers now) use a continually engaged bearing which is always rotating when the engine is running, compared with old designs where the bearing only rotates when the clutch is in. This means that the bearing would likely make a chattering or whooshing noise if faulty when the clutch is out and cause vibration or more of a grinding noise when the clutch is in.

Take it back to the dealer, and “demonstrate” the noise. Tell the SA that the noise started after the dealer installed the new clutch. It could be a bad throw out bearing. With parts sourced globally you never know which company made the bearing, and the company’s QC/QA.

Interesting, I didn't know throwout bearings operated like that. I've only done clutches on older cars.

I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer messed something up. The trans was taken off twice by them because of my original issue a few months ago.

It will be going back to the dealer. Very frustrating since it will be the 3rd time back because of their mistakes.

Yea based on stopping when clutching in, I'd say pilot or input shaft bearing.. Hope it gets sorted out for you, these situations suck!

Long awaited update.

Dropped a car off at a new dealer today. Got a call 2 hours later and they are replacing the trans.

They determined it was an internal problem, and they don't even try to investigate them. Probably for turn around time, and so they don't have to investigate further if it ever has another problem.

I'm happy

congrats on the new parts but why did they replace the clutch and flywheel in the first place?

Clutch and flywheel we're both done at a different dealership. I know the clutch was literally them throwing parts at it.

The flywheel was either a separate issue or related to the transmission issue. I had a slight vibration while in neutral, and while clutched in during shifts until they replaced the flywheel.

That could very well be the root of your problem. BMW specifically states that clutch and dmf should be replaced at the same time. I dont understand why they would replace one at a time.
