Something Strange

I drive a 2017 230i with barely 7,500 miles on it. Yesterday as I got in my car and pressed the start button, the ignition kept going but the car won't start. The electronics came on as well. I tried 2-3 times, but still no luck. Then I tried one more time and kept the start button pressed for a few more seconds, and it finally started. The car has been starting normally since then. But it makes me nervous knowing that it didn't start yesterday. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do I need to get it checked out? Thanks

Unless you are comfortable with this repeating or deteriorating, why would you not?

This might be a very stupid question on my part, but did you have your foot depressing the brake pedal? I remember when I first got a G35 back in 2007 and it had an itellikey with push button start. Once in a while I would catch myself not holding the brake while pushing the start button because it was new technology back then. Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious.

Without the brake pedal depressed, ignition won't start. You'll also see a bunch of warning and instructions to press the brake pedal in the instrument cluster.

Yeah I had it pressed. I wouldn't have heard the ignition otherwise like the person above said. I am getting it checked out by the dealer, but was just wondering if this happened to anyone else.

This used to happen to me too. I would go to start the car then the engine would shut off mid start. I realized what was happening is that when you go to start the car if you hold your foot on the brake then hold the start button and take your foot off the brake before it starts up sometimes it will shut off. What I do now is just hold my foot on the brake and press start button once and have never had the problem again.

had you recently filled up with gas ? Lots of rain in Baltimore and wouldn't be farfetched to think a gas stations tanks took in some water.

Weak battery? Was the car not driven along time before this happened?

Nope. Happened after work, and this car is my daily driver.

Same thing happened today...I'm glad I'm getting it checked out soon.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm running a Dinan stage 1 tune. Could that be causing this?

Of course the tune could be causing it, though you can't tell for sure until you remove the tune. If the problem goes away then you have at least a partial answer.

It’s under warranty so take it to the dealer. The Service Engine Soon light is on only when an emissions related code is present.

So the dealer thinks the problem is with Dinan based on the codes they saw and the sensors to which the Dinan box is connected. Removed the tune and told me to drive for a few weeks to see if the problem goes away. Also said Dinan boxes are sh*t these days. Lots of cars have been having issues. And this is a Dinan friendly dealership FYI that sells Dinan products and is listed as a 'Pro Authorized Dealer' on the Dinan website...

I had one problem after almost 21,000 miles - Dinan was responsive and prompt with their service and replacement of the harness, apart from that I have had no problems with the tune.

The resolution was a new harness and connectors.
