Something Strange
I drive a 2017 230i with barely 7,500 miles on it. Yesterday as I got in my car and pressed the start button, the ignition kept going but the car won't start. The electronics came on as well. I tried 2-3 times, but still no luck. Then I tried one more time and kept the start button pressed for a few more seconds, and it finally started. The car has been starting normally since then. But it makes me nervous knowing that it didn't start yesterday. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do I need to get it checked out? Thanks

Unless you are comfortable with this repeating or deteriorating, why would you not?

This used to happen to me too. I would go to start the car then the engine would shut off mid start. I realized what was happening is that when you go to start the car if you hold your foot on the brake then hold the start button and take your foot off the brake before it starts up sometimes it will shut off. What I do now is just hold my foot on the brake and press start button once and have never had the problem again.

Same thing happened today...I'm glad I'm getting it checked out soon.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm running a Dinan stage 1 tune. Could that be causing this? Last edited by hz101; 08-24-2018 at 03:38 PM.. |

Of course the tune could be causing it, though you can't tell for sure until you remove the tune. If the problem goes away then you have at least a partial answer.

So the dealer thinks the problem is with Dinan based on the codes they saw and the sensors to which the Dinan box is connected. Removed the tune and told me to drive for a few weeks to see if the problem goes away. Also said Dinan boxes are sh*t these days. Lots of cars have been having issues. And this is a Dinan friendly dealership FYI that sells Dinan products and is listed as a 'Pro Authorized Dealer' on the Dinan website...

I had one problem after almost 21,000 miles - Dinan was responsive and prompt with their service and replacement of the harness, apart from that I have had no problems with the tune.
