228i standard to M Sport brake conversion
Hi all,
Looking to convert my standard 228i brakes to the M Sport brakes. I picked up a set of M235i M sport brakes (used 35k miles) from a local owner. I received all 4 Brembo (blue) calipers, pads, rotors and sensors. Ideally I'd like to go through this process once and do it right the first time. I'm hoping any one of you who have done this conversion can chime in, not sure if there is any hardware I am missing. (coding brake bias, bolts, dust shield to accommodate larger rotor?, and correct rear rotor to allow use of handbrake) etc. Being that the pads and rotors have 35k on them, I'm contemplating on replacing the rotors and definitely the pads. Can anyone recommend aftermarket pads/rotors they use. Aside from regular street driving, I will be attending a handful of autocross events throughout the year. Thanks Last edited by lateapex'er; 01-18-2018 at 10:14 AM.. |

You want to remain with the stock vented discs with plain face as these provide the best heat sinks for track use. Slotted have some advantages in keeping pads deglazed, but flip side is you'll chew through pads. Avoid drilled where possible.
Front discs 340x30: - Zimmerman 34116792223 Minimum (worn out) thickness for these is 28.4mm Rear discs 345 x 24: - Zimmerman 34206797605 Minimum thickness is 22.4mm so it may be worth using a set of vernier callipers to measure the life left in the ones you have. Pads for mixed road and track you want EBC yellow stuff. Work from cold, i haven't experienced any fade on track from successive 120mph - 40mph breaking scenarios with these either. Make sure you upgrade brake fluid to something like Motul rbf 600 too. DP42130R - Front DP42133R - Rear As far as i know the handbrake shoes fit in the interior rear hub of the rear brake discs which is universal between brake models. You probably will need new dust shields and bolts but you'll be able to find part numbers easily on realoem.com for those. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...MW-M235i&mg=34 Edit: The dust shields may be universal looking at the diagrams. if they're significantly bigger than the 228i stock rotors, id take this to be the case Last edited by allthatisntnow; 01-19-2018 at 07:54 AM.. I just want to add that using metal brake lines would be a worthy upgrade. Although the stock set up is great, a common nit pick is a less than firm grab with initial brake applications. But once they grab there is a brutal amount of stopping force. Metal brakes lines to the best of my knowledge, fix that 'initial feel issue', making them a near perfect brake set up. But note I have the stock M-Sport brakes without the metal lines and I still love them.

Thanks for all the info 2msport and allthatisntnow...For those interested, I ended up going with StopTech pads, Stainless Steel lines from Turner (StopTech), and ATE Type 200 brake fluid from a local shop. I will be installing everything on Saturday and hoping not to run into any roadblocks. In the meantime, can anyone confirm if I'd need to change the front protection plates? I was told since my car has the M Sport package (330x24) rotor according to realoem...it automatically comes with the bigger protection plate to fit the 340x24 (rotor) as well. The way everything is listed on realoem confuses the hell out of me! The last seven of my VIN is VW97964. Thanks!

For the M Sport Brakes, these are the part numbers required:
Front Left - 34116872081 (same for M Sport package) Front Right - 34116872082 (same for M Sport package) Rear Left - 34216792243 (with M Sport package - 34216792239) Rear Right - 34216792244 (with M Sport package - 34216792240) It looks as though the fronts are OK, but the rears are different. The standard 312mm front rotors have different plates, but the M Sport package brakes and M Sport Brakes share the same plates, whereas on the rear the standard brakes and M Sport package brakes share the same plates and the M Sport brakes are different. |

UPDATE: [IMG][/IMG]
Everything bolted on directly except the rear protection plates. The rear backing plates seemed like a pain to remove (remove hub) in order to allow the larger backing plate to go on, to accommodate the bigger rotor. Long story short, I cut the rear backing plates out. Unfortunately for me as I was cutting the first side I snipped the abs speed sensor with it. Currently have the "chassis stabilization" message on idrive and a CEL/ABS light. Will be looking around for the part number and ordering on Monday. |

M sport brake upgrade
What are the wheel requirements when you upgraded the brakes? 18 inch wheel minimum or will 17 inch wheels work, as well?
Thanks |

I haven't tried to put on 17's. So I couldn't comment. I don't think they'd fit. I'm sure you can find an answer in the wheels section.

The ARC-8 17X9s fit over my front calipers. Mind you, I'm running -1.9° camber with coilovers and a bit of fender pull up front. I'm guessing it doesn't, but I'm not sure if that affects caliper clearance or not.
FWIW, this winter I'm running BBS SR 17X7½ ET35 square - these came from Tire Rack with winter tires mounted on them. I imagine if you go to the Rack, you'll find some others that fit, too.
