228i Petrol expenditure
Hi all,
So I've had the '16 228i for a couple of days now. The first day I got it I did a full system reset and it was showing me 0 L/100Km (Obviously since I havent moved yet) few days later its showing me a figure around 11-13 L/100Km. I have a BMW 328i and it does around 8/10 L/100Km so I'm a bit worried since its a heavier car with the same-ish engine. Is this normal or should I be worried? I just want to point out that it is summer here and AC is on 18 degrees medium fan most of the time driving. Let me know what you guys think EDIT: More about the condition of the car M-sport package 19'' wheels 91/92 Octane gas Automatic transmission combination of Comfort and Sport mode (about 60/40 split between the 2) Last edited by Coins; 04-21-2018 at 06:24 AM.. |

I drive Sport mode or higher 100% of the time and drive exclusively in Spring, Summer and Fall with my 228i xdrive. I average 10-13L/100hm with mostly city driving; AC is rarely on. 11-13L/100km with ac on most of the time sounds about right.

It really does depend on the type of driving you do. I've driven my 228 hard for a lot of miles and kept track of most of them on Fuelly (link in my sig). I went from a long commute to short and my mileage dropped by almost 10mpg.

hmm interesting.
So the fuel consumption between the 235i and the 228i isn't much... I got the 228i because I thought I would be saving up on fuel since my life here is pretty much traffic 100% of the time. My average speed is 25km/h for my 23km long commute to work ( 1 way ) according to my trip computer averaging about 10-11L/100km now as I have adjusted my driving habits a little bit and started using 98 Octane fuel. The car only has 4000 KM on it so things should get better, correct? Question, when I put my instrument cluster to show live L/100KM figures; when I accelerate from a standstill it shows a figure of around 20+ L/100km for the first 2 to 3 gears. Is this normal? My problem is the traffic where I live is just traffic stops everywhere and I need to accelerate, stop, accelerate, stop, accelerate and stop again. SUPER SAD. |

I never understand why people buy an enthusiast's car and then obsess over gas mileage. Not criticizing here, just marveling at human nature.

Hi man,
I understand your criticism and I agree with you to a certain degree. To me at least, I wanted a fun to drive daily driver that is comparable to the best driving machines available to buy yet affordable that I can actually buy it and enjoy it, and the BMW 2 series hit that mark to me. I had a 328i, my father has an X6 and my friend has a 428i and so far my little 228i has the same fuel economy as the X6 which is kinda crazy regardless of how you look at it even if its an enthusiast's car. Just wanted to be sure that what I am experiencing is normal or if I should get the car checked out by the dealer Cheers and have a good day |

I get no more than 16 mpg but that's with a S1 tune and a heavy foot. I guess these boosted fours work pretty hard.
