Maybe M-perf exhaust that comes with it may add that extra hp? (which is not installed by default on m240i)

M-perfomance exhausts aren't supposed to have any effect on power

I asked about a MPPK for the M240i a while back. Was told that the M240i was already mapped (by BMW) as though it had an MPPK installed. Thinking about it, this made sense when comparing the B58 numbers in other BMW models to the M240i. HP and torque bumps were about what you'd expect if there was an MPPK installed on say a 340i.

I'd not look for anything other than cosmetic "M" parts or exhaust for the M240i from BMW. If you want a bump in performance, look to aftermarket power modules.

A dealer installed Dinan elite provide a smooth operating and noticeably quicker M240i w/o any real warranty concerns.

Yes, the M235 and M240 already come with the MPPK tune already installed. It's why the N55 and B58 in the M235 and M240 are rated at a higher hp and tq than the N55s and B58s in the 3 and 4 series (without the MPPK).

Yeah that makes sense, but I thought I read somewhere that if you add the power kit to a 340i, it bumps it up to 355 hp, which is 20 more than the m240i.

I'd bet the M240i published HP&Torque numbers are under-rated by about what the above numbers reflect.

I believe some of the Dyno numbers I've seen on the M240i reflect this also.

On a Dynojet, a stock M240 makes around 320-330whp and 330-340wtq or about 390hp/400tq. The M235 makes around 300-310whp and 320-330twq or about 365hp/390tq. So yeah, these motors are grossly underrated.

It's seems like the numbers BMW publishes are closer to WHP & Torque than crank numbers. Same w/ my Mini Cooper. Listed @ 189 HP & 221 Torque but dyno'd at 188.03 WHP & 229.36 wtq.

Personally. I wish all cars were sold using the wheel numbers.

2016 BMW X3  [0.00]
2015 BMW M235ix  [0.00]
The differences between these numbers are well within normal variance.
This reminds me of wine sold as having 12.5% alcohol. In reality, and legally everywhere, the number is anywhere between 11% and 14%, but only better French producers will list the range rather than the median. Perhaps a better auto manufacturer like BMW should do the same as the French wineries. So instead of 189, they should list 185-193. Then we would have less to complain about.

My point being that the dyno wheel numbers on my Mini are in line w/ the published HP and Torque numbers in the sales brochure. Those brochure numbers are generally the crank/flywheel numbers - at least w/ American cars. Actual HP and torque at the wheels is about 12% to 15% less (or about what your wine alcohol % numbers are ) than what is published for American cars.

As and example my 2015 C7 rated @ 455hp and 460 torque dyno'd @ 408whp and 399 wtq. I would have loved to have seen 450 WHP and 450 wtq. But that's not how GM reports HP and torque (and I'd wager Chrysler and Ford do the same). Hp & Torque numbers are worthless IMO unless they are @ the wheels.

While all M235is and M240s come with the MPPK from the factory, the thread, and what I read in the past was regarding this particular car:

http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/03/15/bm...rtible-geneva/

It was an M240 vert which they acknowledge makes 340hp, but was tuned for 360hp instead.

So realistically, it is surprising they didn't offer this for the 240s as well. Unless they did, and just lied about the power.

Interesting that they marketed offering an additional bump in power to the m240i but as far as we all know this isn't even available. Strange.

Yeah, it would be curious if people took an M240 and a 340 with the MPPK (or rather several) and averaged down what they were all putting down on a dyno. It could very well be a case of the M240s being rated at 340hp but really putting down more.

Yeah that would be cool to see. my guess is that if the m240i is underrated, then so is the 340i.

Dynos of the MPPK equipped 340 and 440 show the same power as the M240. There's nothing special between the two MPPK tunes as they are the same. It was the same thing with the MPPK equipped 335/435 and the M235. Adding the MPPK to the 335/435 added about 2 psi and 15-20whp and 25-35wtq or around 18-23hp and 30-40tq at the flywheel. The MPPK on the B58 doesn't appear to be any different in terms of gains.

Dinan's website (who post numbers at crack) show it making 369 HP and 414 FT-LB of torque. So, what is the manufacturer legally required to publish? Power numbers a Wheel or power numbers at Crank/Motor?? Is there a industry wide standard on this? Does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer??

I remember a while back someone told me BMW’s published hp and torque figures are the absolute lowest produced figures on the worst days/conditions. It’s in their best interest to provide figures that can and always be attained. I guess to cover their ass from lawsuits from customers who complain their car isn’t putting out what was advertised. I’m sure there have been instances where a customer had sued due to this. I doubt there’s anyone who sued because their car was was “overpowered” 😁

So pretty that more or less signals that they are underrating the M240s compared to the MPPK 340/440s?

American cars are normally all crank numbers. BMW/MINI numbers are closer to wheel numbers than crank numbers (my Cooper S lists 189 as the published HP, Dyno'd it produced 188. at the wheels. Previous threads seem to reflect this to be the case w/ most of the German brands. I'd wager the number shown in the brochure for the M240i are closer to wheel numbers rather than crank.

OMG you're here too. I just picked up an M2 2 weeks ago, love it and it looks great next to the Z3.
