My 16 M235 updated itself about 2 weeks ago. I didn't have it back on the road yet so was sitting in it warming the oils and selected Nav, options and update and away it went. It took a bit of time but no issues. It has done it by itself several times since I've owned it. I'll have to check the version to see what it is. As I understand it this is all part of your connected drive subscription so when it runs out the map updates probably do too. My model does not allow screen mirroring from my phone so I can't use google or waze which is too bad.

I have a 2016 m235i that updated frequently the first year I had it. Recently I realized I haven't updated in about a year. The version was 2017-1. Almost the very next day it updated, but only to 2017-2. The loaner I had recently had 2017-4 which actually had a road that that mine is missing on one of my drives. I feel like their is nothing inherently wrong with the car or idrive, but some weird way they are deciding when to push OTA map updates out.

It baffles me that you can request to check for updates like almost every other online updating process.

I have since received 2 more updates. I’m up to 2017-2 for the Midwest.
