Locked my BMW F10 car keys in the trunk. Travelling overseas, I suddenly locked my car keys in the trunk when travelling by boat. My separate keys were 300km behind and I was heading towards Germany. I broke the small window in the back seat. I tried opening the door, failed. Tried opening front doors with a handmade tool, I tried pushing the trunk opening button, nothing. There was no solution to get inside the trunk without breaking a larger window and jumping inside the car and reaching for the key in the trunk through the ski-opening.

If you locked your keys in the trunk and do not have a spare one. Crack a window big enough for someone to get into the car.

Are you nuts??? I did this with my old E82 back in the day. Called AAA they sent a flatbed with what i will call a 'professional' who was inside my car in 30 seconds after he arrived. Basically wedged a piece of wood in the window to just get enough space in, threw a fancy coat hanger in and he was in. I was blown away. I gotta assume the 2er is the same concept, no windows need to be broken. I guess a plus of having frameless windows.

I think some one in a locked trunk with battery disconnected thread stuck a coat hanger in through the split seat gap and managed to hook the emergency trunk release.

Would be great if OP could update with what happened!

This just happened to me also. Had to use a long jimmy to get the latch to let my trunk open, and it was a royal PITA. The actuator is toast and will be ordering a new one so I can have my trunk back. The motor sounds like a grinding clutch when it is done. For now the back passenger seat is down. For a 3 year old car this is pretty lame, especially when there is no way to get access to the trunk if the seats are up, unless you have the right tool.

This doesn't happen on my 2016 UK M235i Convertible with Comfort Access. It won't re-lock the trunk.

I just went out and tried this: I locked the car, then opened the trunk by hand, put the keys in the trunk, then closed the trunk.

It gave out three moderately loud 'beep-beep' sounds; the warning flashers lit up on each 'beep'; and the red LED under the rear-view mirror went out.

I just opened the trunk by hand again, took out the keys, and then closed it. Then I had to lock the car again.

Is this ability to lock your keys in the trunk just on US models? And in Sweden too, it seems? Or the other way 'round, perhaps? i.e. UK regulations prohibit it (it's hard to imagine UK lawmakers being this thorough!).

Agree with msej449, don't think it's possible to lock the keys in the trunk, or car for that matter, with Comfort Access, but not all 2 Series have Comfort Access.

Without Comfort Access there aren't any proximity sensors near the doors or trunk, only the ignition. In this case you can't lock the doors using the console button when the doors are open, so it would require a slightly open window with the car locked then "posting" the key through the window crack to lock it inside the car

To lock in the trunk it seems the easiest way is to open the trunk, lock the car, throw the key in the trunk (or in a bag in the trunk), then close the trunk - sounds like a case for comfort access or having another key nearby. I have my key profile (no Comfort Access) set to unlock doors and trunk with a single button push, if the car is locked when I push the trunk open button on the key, it unlocks the doors too, making it harder to lock the key in the trunk.

I have inadvertently closed the trunk a couple of times with the keys inside but comfort access simply wont lock the lid. Same with doors. Clever bastards!

Yes it can be locked in with comfort access, been there done that. Locked car, opened trunk, threw in comfort access key after running, shut trunk, went to door and its locked along with trunk. Yes its comfort access I’ve owned 16 BMW’s and I know what comfort access is. Maybe it being a 2014 model made the difference.

If there is interference that blocks the signal, such as other radio emissions on the same frequency or the key near or within a metal object that blocks the signal, the key may not be detected. I’ve had this happen on a couple of occasions with rental cars. In one particular scenario in the UK, the interference was so strong that the physical key was the only thing that would work with the car, until I moved it to another location.

One item I have in my wallet is a credit card sleeve that prevents RFID snooping, this will also shield the remote from working, if I place the key inside it, should shield any low power transmissions.

I don’t have comfort access on the M240i, but do have the Kessy equivalent on the Golf R. I just tried putting the VW key in a gym bag with a large aluminium water bottle, it gives problems in key detection with “key not in range” messages sometimes. Wrapping the key in aluminium foil makes it undetectable virtually all the time, even when held right against the antenna near the door handle or ignition antenna.
