"Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power..."

I got this malfunction showing up on iDrive about 3 weeks ago. I pulled over and restarted the car and since then I had not seen it again.. until today. Both times, I did not notice a power decrease. Again, today I parked the car, restarted it and the car had cleared the error again.

I went ahead and did TeleService diagnostics and it said I should hear from the service center soon.

Anyone else have this error show up on their M235i?

The car has less than 700 miles and already I am getting engine faults that seem recurring on BMW's?.....

These cars are painfully complex. If the ECU detects anything out of parameters it goes into limp mode to keep the engine from doing damage to itself. Not that that helps, but it could be something big, or practically nothing. Between now and the time you get a call back from the dealership you might be able to go to auto zone and have them read your codes, then google whatever code comes up.

I got this message on my euro trip, at about 1800 miles. It went away after I pulled over and turned the car off.

It's the pansy warning. If you are not breaking in your car properly it will yell at you and go into limp mode. Gives you another chance to do things right after a restart.

Last statement. Not true. Mine had 80 miles on it, I pinned it at 155ish.. Driven hard everyday, no such pansy warning.

I know, break in, break in. 6th new BMW... All driven the same.. Last M3, 4 years ago... Drive hard since day one.. Not a single engine problem all the way up to 127K miles.

I gunned it off of the lot when I drove it home... and many times in between. In fact, one of the two times I got the "reduced power" message was after a spirited row from 1-4th. After the restart a few days ago, I have not gotten the message since and I have not changed my driving style.

So I take it no one else has seen this message?

This thread is really comforting lol. I slammed mine the first day I had it, and after I was scared that I hurt the engine because of all the talk of a "gentle break in." It seems fine to me.

Seriously though, one of the internal monitors is triggering the limp mode. It is not directly related to your driving, but more what a sensor is reporting back to the ECU. Given how many different sensors are in your car the only way to really know is go and have it plugged into a BMW diagnostic reader and see what codes came up. It could be a failing/bad sensor or a real issue with one of the units in or attached to the engine that is causing the message. Best to get it checked to be sure it is not the start of a more serious issue.

Sorry for making fun, was just in a playful mood.

It's a known fault on the M135i too.. I believe it's related to the start/stop system combined with the auto box. I had it like 3 times in 31000 KMs, always in traffic jam.

Did you notice the cooling fan running? there has been a few M135 and M235i here in the UK with faulty cooling fans, that trigger limp mode.

All faults are recorded so it is simple enough to go to the dealer and tell them this happened and they can tell you exactly what went wrong each time. For a car under warranty this is painless and free. Autozone and others will come up empty if the error is not currently active.

Hi, guys. New to the forum here. I have a 2015 bmw m235xi. The car starts perfectly normal, idles well, and drives good. It feels like it has good boost. After driving it for a couple minutes, the car goes into limp mode(drive terrain malfunction). I checked for any codes and this is what I got

P0238-turbocharger boost sensor a circuit high.

P1338- manufacturer control.

C342d-manufacturer control.

P0073-ambient air temperature sensor circuit high.

I just don’t understand that a car could start and drive normally than 5 minutes later go into limp mode. Most of the codes here are related to boost, but it doesn’t seem like I have a boost leak anywhere. Does anybody know what could possibly cause this problem? Thanks
