The 1-series was funny like this as well. I think BMW keeps the roofline kind of bubble shaped so that the car doesn't look too sleek. They want the character of the design to be smaller and more playful; partly to protect their up-line models. A side effect of this is that the 1-series had a ton of headroom for such a small car. Even 6-footers could wear a helmet inside the car with the seat lowered to its lowest. The 2-series appears to maintain the high roof, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was taller inside than the sleeker E92 coupe.
