Transforming exteriorally a 220d into M2
Good evening everyone.
Thank you in advance for being able to visit this post. I have a dream of having an M2. Recently it came out the M2 Coupe in bmw and seems to be incredible. I am a person who does not understand very much about cars, therefore i apologize firsthand for saying something that does not make sense and I ask you to correct me. since i do not have the money to have an M2. I found an alternative that I want everyone's opinion and advice. I really want to go ahead with this ideia because i really really like this car. I am thinking of buying a 220d Coupe with Sport Pack M. After purchasing this car I am thinking of changing the rear and front bumpers for those of the M2. Change the rims and tires to those of the M2, which are light alloy wheels and also add the rear wheel Add the 4 back tips, 2 on each side. I had to think about the case of the mirrors, because the mirrors of the bmw m2 are carbon fiber and very different but I think I will not put mirrors. Is there anything else that I should take into account in my project? What advice can you give me? Do you think buying a 220d coupe with M sports package already helps you redirect to an M2? What do i have to watch out when turning a bmw 220d into a M2 only on the exterior? I am assuming that interiorally i can't change much... But if you have any idea on how to improve wether it is interiorally or exteriorally please let me know! All opinions are welcome! |

My understanding is in many countries higher displacement engines are taxed heavily and sometimes luxury cars are taxed as a luxury item. So I can understand why you wouldn't want to spend money on a M2. Anyway, you may not be able to just change the bumper, from my understanding the fenders are wider on the M2. (Bumper is probably too wide.) Anyway, it is in poor taste to make a fake M2. Get the car, and enjoy it the way it comes. |

Don't do it. All the listed mods will cost you a fortune. Buy a nice 220i (not a diesel) in M Sport packet and it eill be a nice car with styling at least slightly close to the M2 :-). Benefit is thatit's a nice petrol engine that you will enjoy more than dated 20d (on the f22 platform of course).

To change everything on the exterior of your car will cost you a fortune. You have to change the front and rear bumper, all 4 fenders, exhaust, wheels, maybe even brakes. But the point of owning an M2 isn't the exterior look, but the performance. I say don't spend the money on M2 parts, just buy a 230i and you'll be happy.

Looked on BMW Portugal website 2 series comes in 218d (110kw) , 220d (140kw), 225d(165kw), 218i (3cyl 100kw) & m240i (250kw).
There is no 230i option. In Australia we don't have a diesel option for the 2 coupe. I may be biased but my 230i m sport looks pretty neat as it comes, the only exterior thing I'd like to see would be single left & right exhaust exits. |

I have seen someone transform an E82 120d coupe into a 1M and it is just wrong. Hearing a diesel sound under a 1M style should be punishable by law. |

Well, of course you should do as you wish. As you'll have seen, there are some purists who think tarting up a d would be weird or wrong. To them, it would be. Others think you should spend the money getting a truly better car ... but mind you, even then, what "better" means is up to you. I'd go for more performance and maybe a few upgrades to look or sound.
But that's just me. You need to decide what's right for you. |

I think it is a cool idea, but waaay too expensive to fully do it (as noted - a full redo of exterior). It's not like he has the option of affordable 240 or dropping another 10-20 grand for an M2 like we can in the states (and even that is more than many could do).
I'd just stick with basic exterior upgrades to the sport body - spoiler/splitter, M-series mirrors, and stripe/graphics. Perhaps fender flares and one of those cool new CF hoods if you want to really go wild? Nobody else will have anything like it - one of the main reasons to mod in the first place. And for the interior, check out the thread on here about adding the custom stitching (free and good looking, but you might go blind or crazy completing it). |

Looking at the prices and options on BMW Portugal, if you wanted a manual then you are stuck with the 220d as the 225d is automatic only. If you're ok with the auto then I would choose a 225d as the price different is not nearly as much as stepping up to an M240i. The diesel is your best choice as I see you can only get a 218i or M240i for petrol.
For all those wondering: - 220d - €46000 - 225d - €50000 - M240i - €66000 If you want visual upgrades, an option instead of the M2 conversion is always to do an M235iR conversion. It would probably be much easier in the end. |

Plus you can get a bigger discount from the dealer, if you buy a M140i instead of a M240i. That is, if you fancy a 1 series in the first place. |

It would also be crazy expensive to make all the cosmetic mods to transform the M-sport into an M2 look-alike. As someone who went more of the budget route (although admittedly still bought a BMW), I think the looks of the M-sport 2er are already nice if you spec it properly and are nothing to be embarrassed of. Or, check out the forum for modifications people have already done, and you may find some more realistic affordable ideas that you like. |

"Poverty spec" wow....
Moving on. OP - I suggest you get the car that you like as far as driving dynamics based on the budget you set for yourself. I wouldn't spend money on making a lower spec model into a higher spec model. Instead I would save that money so the next go around you can get into the car you want. It's not always about what other people think, but consider that any enthusiast will likely write you off as a poser if they see a lower spec model visually converted to a higher spec version. It almost never passes visual inspection and I suspect if it did, you probably paid more than buying the original car outright. |

Don't do it. It's like marrying the girl next door and hoping everyone thinks she's Jennifer Lawrence.

No matter what you do to it, it will never be an M2. If you don't want to pay for an M2, but want to be closer to it, why not focus on performance mods instead of buying a costume? I would be much more impressed with an over performing 220d than a fake M2.
Don't want to be like this guy.

"Exteriorally, interiorally". He's already making up new words, so let him be creative with his car.

Poverty spec.. Buying a 220d in Portugal is more expensive than buying a M2 in the US.
Anyways, the M2 front and rear bumper does not fit a non-M car. The M2 is wider. See comparison pictures in link below. http://www.bmwblog.com/2015/10/13/bm...to-comparison/ |

Yes, he does not deserve to be mocked, merely counseled.
