Exhaust Valve Open in Comfort?

I recently learned that (in addition to other changes) putting the car into "Sport" will open up a valve in the exhaust to allow for a sportier sound.

Is there a way to have this valve remain open even in Comfort mode? The NYC roads are brutal and I find myself driving the car in Comfort mode unless I know I have a smooth stretch of pavement ahead. I'd like to have the increased exhaust note at all times, though.

Change your pdc settings in idrive to keep the suspension in comfort when putting the car in sport mode...

That or disconnect the solenoid in the exhaust when it is open.

Hmm, I'll have to take a look! For some reason I thought I remembered the only parameters I could adjust were "drivetrain" and "chassis".

yes, just select "drivetrain only" and you will get comfort suspension in "sport"

I see what you're saying. Unfortunately that will change the shift logic and hold the gears/revs longer than I'd like in daily traffic/easy driving.

I wish there was a way to give me the "Sport" exhaust note all the time, without altering any other chassis or drivetrain parameters. That's one of the things I love so much about my Miata; it's analog. I hop in, start it and go. The suspension is fixed, the steering is fixed, the exhaust always sounds the same. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love () my M235, it's just quite the change from what I'm used to in a daily driver.

I know what you're saying. However, having choices is sometimes nice.

I have the MP Exhaust and in sport mode, the overrun is LOUD in underground parking garages. It's nice to be able to "turn it off" sometimes so I don't scare the crap out of anyone or make the parking attendants at my office building think my car is going to explode.

My MPE is sitting on the floor... perhaps it should be installed beneath the car ?

Get a JB4 or the Canflap from BMS this is a feature that you can toggle on and off very easily.

Definitely. I am way more of a "go" than "show" type of car nerd, but the MPE sounds freaking awesome. Adds a lot of character to the car.

I agree - I've owned two previous generation M3's and never felt the need to change the oem exhaust (especially on the S65 drool) -- but so glad I got the mpe on the M235. I think it sounds awesome!!

True, well you can always switch to M and shift yourself at any rpm you want

"disconnect the solenoid in the exhaust when it is open"

I agree with the OP, I would like to keep the valve open regardless of drive setting or configuration. How does one keep the valve open? Does simply disconnecting the solenoid work? Is it spring loaded? How do you disconnect it? I searched for a DIY but couldn't find it. TIA

In the 3-series, you had two options (I haven't looked closely at the 2 yet).
  1. You could unplug the connector for the flap solenoid. The valve would remain open, but the unplugged connector would set a silent ECU code.
  2. You could remove the vacuum line from the valve, plug the line, and wire tie it out of the way. Search for "golf tee mod".

On the 2 it's electric so there is no vacum line

Just unplug the flap. Wait till the car is cold and flap is open then just unplug it....done. Unplugged mine when I installed the MPE and have not plugged it back in

Thanks.

Sounds like a better design. The vacuum system on the 3 was such that they would rattle on minor leaks. Sounded terrible.

Ok so could anyone explain more simply what this accomplishes? What it sounds like is that the valve remains closed on cold start up so that the exhaust only flows from one side, so if you unplug it at that point then the valve remains closed and the car is louder all the time?

I'm confused between the valve being open/closed and which exhaust pipes are flowing and how it makes it louder.

When I drive my car in sport mode the exhaust sound is more prominent than when in comfort mode. You can easily hear the difference simply by revving the engine in neutral and switching modes from comfort to sport. I like the louder sound but don't want to drive around in sport mode all the time. I am hoping that unplugging the connector will accomplish this.

Right, yeah I would like to accomplish the same exact thing. I guess I just don't get how that happens...

Are you talking about outside of the car or inside? If inside, there's also the contribution from the from the simulated engine sound level changing.
