Dye the red stitching?

Has anyone successfully dyed the red stitching on the steering wheel? Deciding to complete my purchase of 2016 228i, non- msport package. The red is so garish.

I believe your dealer can spec the car with black stitching.

They were supposed to but now tell me BMW said it's not possible. Kind of stuck.

Wait so the car is ordered and they told you this after the sheet went in with black instead of red?

Since you're obviously annoyed enough that you're trying to dye it I'm sure you made it clear to them that you didn't want red. I'd make them swap in an M wheel for you. It's much nicer anyway.

Unfortunately at least as far as BMW is concerned custom touches in the 2-series are hard to come by. If it was a 3 or up your dealer could call their VIP rep and get you basically whatever you want. 2s are not customizable like that.

Is the M wheel really nicer? I can't find pics to compare the two.

Yes. Much nicer. You will need to pony up for the M-sport package to get it though.

You may be able to get the dealer to swap just the wheel for you if the screw up was on their end. Or at least cover the labor.

The M wheel is superb, agreed. Someone posted wheel swap instructions here, so it is certainly possible.

If you ordered the package with heated wheel, be sure to check whether that feature will be maintained with a wheel swap. Some swaps, even with BMW wheels, have been alleged to lose the heat feature.

Just for another opinion, I prefer the heavier leather graining on the Sportline wheel to the smooth leather on the MSport....but, hey, I also don't mind the red stitching, so take that with a grain of salt!

I have a detailing business. Take it to a good upholsterer and make it look professional. They dye leather for my customers all the time. It won't cost much but it will look much better than other choices.

Thanks Rayscott. Turns out that's what the dealer is doing today. One local leather upholsterer said it wouldn't last because the dye is water based. He gave it 3 months.

I wouldn't get rid of it. I love it so much that I got rubber mats with red accents along with a red accented trunk mat as well.

I would question why and then have the upholsterer explain what he does to make it last longer. I never take my cars to a dealer for things like this. Go to a pro.

The dealer has already done it. I'm getting it tonight. I plan to have it done over if it doesn't last. It's reassuring that you have faith in a lasting job.
Thanks.

Thanks.
What was their process or is that another dealer secret.
