Trunk elastic strap - what do you use it for?

There is an elastic strap in the trunk on the right wheel well. I've seen this in several German cars, but I'm curious what this would typically be used for. Some German logic that escapes me? (Like so many details on this car?)

It's not stretchy enough to put much in there. Or strong enough really. A quart of oil wouldn't really fit (and would be badly exposed to something rolling around loose in the trunk). For now, I've just stuck a plastic grocery bag in there, as it fits well, and they are handy for so many things.

What do you put in the strap?

I know that some do come w/ a fire extinguisher, but not sure if mine even has the elastic-have to check now. I keep all that other stuff (except the pmags) in the farback passenger side bin w/ the netting to hold it in place.

Mine does not have this, wonder if it was specific to either the 235's, or earlier builds? No biggie, since I DK what I'd do w/ it

depending on what you have, and what state, you can break down and fit under the trunk mat too!

It holds the OEM first aid kit that came with my car perfectly. It was there when I bought the car. I'm thinking that it's what it was intended for originally.

Better fill w/Lagavulin, or you could void the warranty.

This. There's quite a bit of storage space in the trunk area if you package things nicely and properly. In my case:

Elastic strap
- 16oz. Slime tire sealant, microfiber towel
Right-corner plastic bin
- Viair 70P air compressor in case
- Dynaplug tire patch kit, valve stems, stem removal tool in aluminum case
- Emergency LED light unit, wrapped in a microfiber towel
- Microfiber drying towel
- Regular microfiber towel
- Half-roll toilet paper, flattened (ya never know ... )
Open space next to battery (under lift-up lid)
All of these items are crammed into an ultralight waterproof compression bag next to the battery:
- first aid kit
- small roll duct tape
- 3" titanium-blade knife
- Heavy duty polymer rope (about 10')
- compass
- rain shell
- multitool
- JB Weld
All of these items are inside a roll-up tool holder opposite the battery:
- standard & Philips screwdrivers
- crescent wrench
- small dial-type air pressure gauge
- 2 pair Vise Grips (small flat nose, medium needlenose)
- needlenose pliers
- small socket wrench with Torx/blade/Philips/Allen drivers

There's probably a couple of things I'm forgetting, too.

My 2016 M235i does not have this strap in the trunk. What's up with that?

Qt of oil, packets of hand degreaser, latex gloves seem to be obvious omissions, and the tarp/shovel to dispose of the body (sorry - it was the duct tape/knife/rope combo that got me going). I keep thinking one of those tyvek clean suits might be good too, but I've been lazy about trying to find one, and my days of roadside undercar repairs have (hopefully) passed. Haven't seen a/b mention this, but I also keep a soda bottle filled with windshield washer fluid. It is enough to get me home, should I run out.

Yeah, well, the foldable shovel and lawn-size trash bags are among those "couple of things I'm forgetting" ...

My car ::knock on wood:: doesn't burn oil at all, so I don't worry about keeping a quart on board ... but the washer fluid idea is a good one ...

Mine holds one box of Trefoil Girl Scout cookies. I'm pleased with my decision to throw out the first aid kit and replace with cookies.

Don't have it in 230i. New motor must not need oil. Would be a good spot for jerky.
