M240i odor w/ open moonroof

Another member posted this in another thread but i thought i'd give it it's own thread to get more views.....
In my 240 when the moonroof is open, i get a strong odor like exhaust fumes. The other member seemed to think it was coming from the vents, not sure where it's originating but it's pretty strong. Any others notice the same thing?

I'm the one having a similar issue. I get it with sunroof and/or windows open.

Oddly enough, i rode around yesterday moonroof open, windows down in an attempt to duplicate what happened several times before, no odor. Weird

So, was getting a chemical smell with moonroof open, but as of 4500 miles it is gone. I figured it was emissions off of glue for lining and lubricants for moonroof mechanism that are trapped when roof an interior cover are closed. Took a bit longer to escape than the rest of the volatiles which make up the new car smell.

Not sure this is the OP's issue, but thought I would share my experience.

I don't know about exhaust fumes, but when the car was new I would get like a rubber/chemical smell.

This was due to a lot of the bits being new. I still get it occasionally from opening the moon roof, but that's because its almost never used.

If it stinks when the roof's open then what smells is probably outside the car.
Where do you live?

What kinda response is this? No help at all. Too ridiculous to even give you an explanation. SMH.

I have our Sport Cat and Muffler Bypass installed and even with all the windows and my sunroof open I do not smell fumes. I definitely would get something check out.

I have this happen in a 328 and a M235. I think the pressure change pulls "smells" up out the roof. When this happened to me it was definitely not exhaust, but some type of "new car parts" smell.

I learned to love it.

My old 235 stank for years with the sunroof open. Some sort of damp rot had gotten into the trunk. I used to put various sorts of odor-eaters back there, which helped some.
But that car was at least five years old when the stench first emerged. Surprising to find it in a 2, which can't be more than three years old by definition.

It's had the smell from day one. Ordered it so I'm the only one one other than a BMW tech that has driven it.

It turns out that when the dealer installed the MPE, the tech failed to remove the protective plastic wrap around the muffler. I discovered this when I saw a piece of plastic hanging off the muffler below the bumper. Anyway, the smell came from the burning plastic. I had another dealer remove the protective wrap and they had to use cleaning chemicals to remove all the burned residue.

Christ... How hard is dealer prep on a new vehicle...

I'm glad it didn't get to flashpoint and was only a annoying nuisance..

Hope it got figured out..

Oh look, Shil's logical thought process wasn't so ridiculous after all.

Well, maybe if you take the 'where do you live' comment out. It's quite obvious he meant not part of the car. The smell was obviously not originating from inside the cabin, otherwise it would've smelled when the windows and sunroof were closed. Your comment is almost as stupid.

Odor update. Have been riding with the BCEP open (Beer Can Ejector Port) AKA moonroof, and the odor is now gone!
