What is the safest / cheapest way to get an M performance LSD installed if you're ordering?
My dealer is so shady about the prices. He didn't give me the exact number (he just says it depends on this, on that yada yada), but doesn't give me a quote on the LSD specifically.

I've been looking at this myself

Port install according to my dealer is around 2800 INSTALLED.....and apparently they dont leave you with the original open diff......

Sub optimal in my opinion

You can purchase the factory unit WITH WARRANTY from dealers and I've seen it advertised for anywhere between 1900 and 2100....usually more

Installation is no more than 3 hrs labor so for ~2200 you get a new factory unit installed and have your original as a spare part

Find another dealer? Maybe ask for the service/parts manager? It's crazy that a dealer wouldn't give you a quote. Offer to bring the car in so they can give a firm estimate.

The other option is to have someone else install it. A differential install is something that any reputable shop can do (it's not hard). The question is whether BMW will simply sell you the differential. They may sell it only as an installed part through dealer networks, or as a port installed option.

You could also consider going third-party. Quaife makes really good quality stuff, and they have a product for the F22.

I think you have to mail your factory differential to the distributor though, which means having your car out of commission for a while.

Boom, $2,100 and you don't have to deal with that shady dealer. Of course, if you're ordering your car, I would absolutely do the port install option. It's $700 cheaper to buy the part, but then you have to get it installed. I don't think it'd cost more than $700, but you've got to find someone reputable to do it (hassle).

Not saying it isn't (simple), but when you're starting from scratch, and you're used to simply going to the dealer, it's still a hassle. The question is whether it's ~$400 hassle.

Personally, I'd do the job myself and pocket the $700.

I would generally agree with you but in this case there's a special tool required which will set me back a chunk of that 2-300 dollar savings

And its an opportunity for me to develop a service relationship with an independent BMW specialist so if/when the dealerships service dept pulls shenanigans I have someone to turn to.

I enjoy working on my own car.....but when its new and under warranty I tend to try to not give the manufacturer/dealer the opportunity to deny my claim for anything

So in my case I'll likely give my dealership the opportunity to earn an additional sale by asking if they will match price on part other dealerships sell it for then talk about install price

If they come REALLY close then I'm happy to give them my busines

If they are hundreds of dollars off then I'll go elsewhere.....but the ball is in their court...ymmv.....I want the dealer on my side....and in all of the vehicles I've owned this has worked well for me

Surprised this thread is longer than the stickied thread in the Powertrain subforum.

It is a simple job, but based on what I've seen, you may need a special BMW tool to do it.

http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=982939

You could probably use a pry bar to get it out. You'd destroy a plastic shield in the process but it's no big deal. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get the CV axles back into the differential. ISTAD seems to say you need special part 33 5 125, but I'm curious whether you can just "shove" it back into place.

First line of evidence, Google "BMW electro mechanical LSD" and you'll find references by BMW that use this terminology to describe their standard open differential that use the brakes for the LS function.

Second line of evidence, the document you link to (Reference PQ05105060) was released on 01-05-16. The port install M Performance Limited Slip Differential option was discontinued at midnight on Sunday 2-28-2016. Yes, I was up at midnight on a Sunday playing with the "Build Your Own" function when to my surprise it disappeared after reloading the web page at 12:30.

Third line of evidence, when I ordered my car on Monday 2-29-2016 the SA was unable to enter the order code for the port install M Performance Limited Slip Differential. After checking with the dealership's manager and the dealership manager talking to the regional manager; the word was the Port Install M Performance Limited Slip Differential Option was discontinued. And, that the M Performance Limited Slip Differential is now only offered as a dealer installed option.

And my fourth line of evidence, (yes I know I said only three) but... my brand new M Performance Limited Slip Differential arrived Wednesday and is sitting on my workbench in the garage, waiting for the arrival of the car next month. There is nary an "electro" connection on the thing.
Hey sorry I know absolutely nothing about rear ends or differentials (yet) and you seem pretty knowledgeable. I am doing a self assign projected (for my OCD) where I do a comparison of my car to the Nissan GT-R, and put the performance attributes in context to the massive price difference.

Anyways, I own a 2016 M235i Xdrive 8A. How can I tell if my car has the true mechanical limited lip differential? or if it has the electronically simulated effect you guys are describing?

Bonus points if you know if what the R35 GTR uses so I can add it to my table here lol

Thanks for your time
