2016 M235i vs. 2017 M240i

Hey guys, I'm trying to justify if its worth 6k going with the M240i over the M235i. So different power unit with more power/torque, but any reports on reliability with the B58 compared to the N55? Tune/mods in the plans, exploring options at the moment.

Any other main differences between the two? Def. nice to have the upgraded iDrive w/ the touchscreen, but can't really think of anything else besides the extra year of factory warranty. Almost pulled the triggered on a 2015 non-CPO a week ago, but stayed a bit more patient. Specs for both cars:

2016 BMW M235i CPO
  • Nav/Technology Package
  • Driver Assistance Package
  • HK Sound System
  • 20k Miles
  • 32k before taxes/fees

2017 BMW M240i CPO
  • Nav/Technology Package
  • Driver Assistance Package
  • HK Sound System
  • 10k Miles
  • 38k before taxes/fees

Thoughts?

My man math says that if you have a hard ceiling on your $38K then go for the M235i and retro-fit the M Perf LSD and perhaps some other goodies of preference. No doubt this will elicit further debate, however.

If you plan on tuning/modding then I'd opt for the M240i personally.

It has more power potential than the N55 based M235i and once the new Supra and M40i hit the public I'm sure the tuning options will explode.

M-Perf LSD would be nice, maybe around 3k~ to retrofit? 6k is a lot of money for some juicy mods.

Any complaints/issues on your M240i? Doing any tune/mods yourself?

This will be fun to watch. There are several folks here who have had an M235 and moved to M240 due to their M235 lease expiring. I don't have any M240 experience but I love my M235. I think consensus is both the N55 and B58 are terrific motors and both seem to be trending toward great longevity. I think the N55 is more tune friendly now, but it's only a matter of time before the B58 catches or surpasses the N55 in that department. There is no doubt the B58 seems to have more upside potential.

From a guy that is picking up a brand spanking new 19' M240i in 2 days and has owned an M235i for 3 years, you will be perfectly happy with the M235i. I think LCI wasn't until 18' so it's essentially the same car sans the engine. The N55 can feel a little soft here and there in certain situations but the sounds it makes are glorious. The B58 on the other hand feels every bit stronger. I think even more than on paper.

Go drive them back to back and see what you think. That's how I decided.

Be sure to compare the CPO and maintenance car vs car too. Forget what year things switched but there were changes. Also find out in service date of each. You could theoretically have longer and more comprehensive coverage on the older car, believe it or not.

Here's a decent vid about the M235 vs. M240...

Er, 2017 M240i does NOT have iDrive 6.0 with touchscreen. That came in MY2018 with the cosmetic LCI. The only change from MY2016->MY2017 is the B58 engine + name change to M240. The rest of the LCI changes (LED lights, new dash, iDrive, different interior trim, new wheels, etc.) all came in MY18. Trust me, I have a MY17 M240i .

Drove the 18 with an MT a couple of days ago. So much TQ!

Thanks for the input. Will keep that in mind, for sure. Headed to the dealer later to test drive the 240.

Right. Didn't know that. Test drove an 18MY in Sunset Orange (sweet color under the sun, don't like the wheels though) and thought they were the same with the 17s.

N55 engine is very good and mature. There will be no regret if you get M235.

B58 is just better engine (mechanically) for obvious reason.
(heard from one one of the BMW employee in Germany that B58 is the best engine they designed)

I have a feeling that B58 architecture may be the last engine that BMW designed from scratch. (before they go all electric)

I went from a 2015 M235i to 2018 M240i and while I like the B58 I lot more, I'm not sure I like it $6k more. I've had no issues with either car from a reliability standpoint.

I had a budget which the M240 with options I wanted was over, but I am entirely happy and love my M235, the best car I've owned. Either choice you will be happy, but personally I'd keep that extra money for other things...at the end of the day a car is a depreciating asset.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Btw, can you guys confirm that there's an auto-blip feature on both cars? If so, can they be turned off in any way (quick search says just turn-off TC?)? I love my heel-toe/rev matching.

Wasn't able to test drive yesterday due to time constraints. Kinda leaning more on the M325i now.

No rev matching (auto-blip) on the M235. I believe that was a feature added to the M240.

Automatic rev-matching was added with the B58 in 2017. I was dreading it at first but after using it every day for 1 year and a half now I have to admit it works really, really well.
