New M235, missing features?

Hi folks,

We ordered a fully spec'd M235 that we just took delivery of. We selected both the Exec and Premium packages... and we have options from both packages present on the car. However, it appears that we're missing:

1) Adaptive headlights. When I turn on the car, the headlight start up sequence moves up and down, but not side to side. Also, when I was driving, it did not appear that the headlights turned. I assumed that the 2 series did not have this feature and shrugged. But after going to the website I see that it does. On my 1M when I start the car, the adaptive headlights move up/down and left/right. Either the start up sequence is different on the 2-series (And I need to re-test), or they forgot to add this to my car when they were building it?

2) Auto-dimming exterior mirrors. My rear view mirror dims, but my exterior mirrors do not. I recall reading about this being removed at some point, but I was just able to build a 2016 with it and it specifically called out exterior mirrors?

Hopefully these aren't two common issues/questions that I just brought up...

Not sure about the first one - still awaiting the arrival of my new M235. But on the second issue, we have auto-dimming exterior mirrors on our X3 and it's fairly noticeable on the X3. The mirrors have a pretty noticeable blue tint to them that doesn't go all the way to the edges.

Yup! That's exactly what I'm looking for... Unless they improved the exterior mirrors and you can't see the film anymore, it looks like my car is missing them.

On some BMWs the adaptive headlights only work when the headlamps are in "Auto" mode- might give that a try.

Thanks for the response. Headlights are on auto... What does your start up sequence look like? Do the lights sweep left/right/up/down or just up/down?

Just up and down.
No dimming of the ext mirrors. I have a 2015 M 235i though.

I have the adaptive lights. Start up only goes up and down that I have noticed. They deff go side to side other times as I can really tell when I am in parking garages the lights go side to side when turning. 2016 m235

The startup sequence on US spec cars with adaptive doesn't include any side to side motion. Sit parked pointed at a wall and turn your steering left/right. The adaptive should be easily noticeable as the xenon cut-off moves left/right with the steering.

headlight start-up motion has always been up+down, Adaptive headlights Left+Right is an extra.. Part of the Executive Package or Premium Package.
Exterior dimming mirrors are also an extra.

IMO just more things to break, consider yourself lucky you dont have it!

Mine go up/down when powering up, but not left/right. They do turn with the vehicle, but I've only noticed this at night (obviously!). As for the dimming mirrors, as others have pointed out, they appear "blue" and not right to the edges of the mirrors. Not sure what package includes these features, can't recall now. What if you look up you VIN, the details should be there.

Btw...are you in Mississauga? I have a strange feeling you're on my street!!

Great suggestion on VIN look up. I'm going to do that. I believe they forgot to add dimming mirrors (no film).

Small world running into you on the forums! Yup, I'm your neighbour from down the street haha!

Thanks to your great suggestion, I was able to confirm that the car should have these options:

430 INT/EXT RR VW MIRROR W AUT ANTI-DAZZLE
431 INTERIOR RR VW MIRROR W AUT ANTI-D
524 ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS (--- I'll have to perform a more thorough test)

... hoping that they're willing to retrofit it at the dealership.

Haha, that's going to be my scientific test tonight. I was driving home through some twisty roads last night and didn't notice them move... But I wasn't actively testing them at the time.

MY16 here. My headlights definitely move left and right. I've also enabled variable light distribution which makes them move even more when transitioning from low to medium speed. Havent noticed anything on start up though as I'm usually going through my "launch sequence" (switch to sport+, wake up spare phone to get Torque up, roll down windows, open moon roof and then start the engine).

i don't recall if my exterior mirrors dimmed. i have 18% tint on my side windows now, so they're basically dimmed all of the time lol. I also have my side mirrors setup to eliminate blind spots which in turn limits the amount of direct light i get from vehicles behind me. i know that the interior rear view mirror dimmed, but I have 5% on the back, so it no longer really dims much either.

Okay, checked my lights. they only go up and down on start up as part of the auto leveling function. Not sure how to test side mirrors as I don't know where the light sensor is. Does it use the one that's in the rear view mirror?

It's on the reverse side of the rearview mirror (the side facing the windshield) offset towards the passenger seat. There's a 1/2" square sensor opening. During the day, cover that opening with your hand and all the mirrors should darken.

NP.

Actually, to be rigorous correct, it uses two sensors on the RV mirror, the one mentioned above and the small circular one at the top center of the mirror side.

The ECU measures the difference between the front and rear mirror sensors, and darkens the mirror when the light detected as coming from the front of the car is less than the light coming from the back. When you cover the sensor on the windshield side during the day, it registers as a big difference between the front and back light levels, with the front being much darker.

Conversely, if you cover the small round sensor on the mirror side of the RV mirror, it prevents the mirror from darkening at all. I know someone who made a small open/closed cover for that sensor from the top of a TicTac box. He flips it open when he wants the autodarkening to work, and closes it when he doesn't.

Uh oh. Look for a $500 "TicTac" option on the next model year..
