'16 m235i. Does it have Active Sound?
Have had my m235i for just one week and like it very much with the exception of a dull drone most noticeable above 2800 rpm. Doesn't sound good. Seems to be there in both Comfort and Sport modes. I tried calling a few BMW genius lines but couldn't get definitive info as to whether or not the 2016 model year m235 has Active Sound installed. From other posts, it seems both 2014 and 2015 do. Can anyone say for sure?
Thanks. -Robert. |

Well, I can say my 2015 did, but after spending $65 and investing under an hour of simple work, it no longer does. And I think not having it (more correctly, not having the constant drone on the highway) is wonderful.

My MY2016 M235i which was a 7/24/2015 build date has it. Personally I like it, these cars are quiet, after getting to know the engine power curve, it aids in shifting manually at the optimum RPM. I don't hear much from it in Comfort mode, maybe the drone you are hearing is just the engine and exhaust. There is a rumble from the exhaust system too.

2016 m235i Active Sound?
Yes.
Received a call back late today from the US Genius office. Guy said it looks like current model m235 does have Active Sound (he initially thought it was only in full M cars but agreed to investigate). Looks like I may need to learn coding or insert the wiring harness at the module in the trunk. Thanks for the input. -Robert. |

I have a 14 and indeed found it annoying on a recent Chicago-Sth Florida trip. Never had a beef with it until then.

Yeah, for me, it was really apparent on an 8 hour drive from New England to DC.

So question,
The guys on the m3/m4 forums with HK audio are just unplugging the amp. on the M235 with HK is this possible without buying the $65 plug? Just curious...was think about trying it out to see if like it without investing the $ |

Only as a test. We have the downrated hk system (no equalizer, etc.). Unplugging the ASD module removes the ASD but it takes the radio out with it. I tried that before I bought the cable. So, for a "See if you like it" test, you can certainly drive the car with the radio off and ASD on to see what that sounds like, then unplug the module to see what removing the ASD is like without the radio. It's fine for a test, but not a viable long-term solution. EDIT: Nah, that's way too much work to see if you don't like it. Pull the radio fuse. Same effect, and only 30 seconds of effort to try it.

Does this apply to a 2016 228i? I tried the "rev the engine to 2500k in park and toggle between Comfort and Sport" -- nothing. I don't hear any difference, and I don't hear a drone at freeway speeds.

I don't hear ASD much in Comfort mode. If the concern is that Sport mode is too loud, you can change the Sport mode setting to chassis only, then with the automatic if you want it to have sport shifting just move the shifter to manual. Now you have full sport mode with Comfort ASD sound.

Thanks! 122 it is. I have the AWE exhaust and it is wonderful. I'll bet even more so w/o active sound. I have emailed TechnicPnP and will probably purchase one when they become available.

Looks like a nice clean solution. My current solution is to stay in comfort mode where the droning is minimal, and use a pedalbox to eliminate the initial dead zone in the pedal travel.
