They aren't the kind of cracks you can see, like dryrot cracks. These cracks are very small and on the inside. They cause the tire to squirm a lot more because the material isn't solid anymore, almost like snow tire sipes.

The lower the TW, the worse it is, so yes for sure.

Yes, it changes the material itself. Heat cycling does as well, as does even tempering in sticky tires. So if you take your 200 tw tires to the track, then home, then track, then home they will last longer than if you just drove the same miles on the street because they would never come up to temp.

Tire tech is wacky really.

Got her up in the air for some refreshing new fluids: engine oil and diff oil. I’m assuming this was the car’s first diff fluid change — at 33,685 miles — those diff drain and fill plugs were on tight!

I installed the Precision Raceworks coil packs last week and the first thing I noticed is that the car has a deeper tone. There’s definitely a few high pitch decibels lost from the engine which I like. Another thing is upshift burps from 1st-2nd-3rd gear manual shifting in sports mode. The idle is spot on and the revs are smooth and throaty in a way.

The diff fluid was medium-dark brown in color. It was a very uniform consistency: sorta like thick mucous. There was a very slight shimmery quality to it. And it smelled pretty bad. Though I was warned about the smell, so I was prepared for worse and it didn't end up smelling as bad as I'd feared.

After letting the diff drain for 30–45 minutes, it was down to a drip every 10 seconds or so. That's when I put in the new drain plug and refilled. It ended up taking about 1 ⅓ qts of new SAF-XJ fluid.

Diff fluid would have been changed at the 1200-mile break-in service. Did the original owner skip it?

I don’t have the service records from the original owner. It had been taken in for service by the original owner exclusively to a southern CA BMW dealership. I talked with the Service Manager at that dealer’s service department — prior to me purchasing the car — and he indicated all expected services had been completed on time. So good point: the diff fluid was likely already changed once before.

I still think it’s a good idea that you changed it

It's possible that the service was reported to CarFax if it was done. Try this: Set up a free MyCarfax.com account, plug in your VIN - any/all service records that were reported will show up. If it's there, it would be good to have documentation of it having been completed. You could even try to going to the named dealership and getting a copy of the receipt.

I didn’t find any of the prior service history for the car on CarFax. However I found that the prior service history items do show up on the AutoCheck (a competitor to CarFax) report. And since the service items were all done at a BMW dealership, I might ask the local service department if they can give me a printout of the service history.

I fired her up, backed her out, warmed her up, and pulled her back into the garage….

And I made sure that my heater was still working properly

Good Lord it’s cold out
