Exactly! People hate the F20 who never have actually seen it IRl. And the F20 is a car that looks way better IRL than on most pictures. BMW really did a bad job on the first press-pictures and is only slightly improving. And another problem is, that you don't really see the dimensions and people still compare it to/see it in E8x-dimensions, but that doesn't work. The F30 is an example where its the other way around. On pics it looks great, IRL the front is from many angles somewhat weird and not that nice.

Agree on all counts. The F20 looks better than the F30 in real life.

It is important to remember that the F2x 2 Series may very well share no exterior parts with the F2x 1 Series just as the F1x 6 Series shares no exterior parts with the F1x 5 series and the F3x 4 Series will share no exterior parts with the F3x 3 Series. In fact, in my personal opinion I think this is very likely.

In particular, it may be the case that the 2 Series will get the integrated grill/headlights of the F30, just as the F32 is rumored to, the F1x/F2x LCI's are rumored to, and the next generation 7 series is rumored to.

The 2er is a variation on the F20 1er , It is made to be more sportier and with the current language of more pronounced features.
The car will still be as distinctive as the F20 though.
Modern BMW's are designed to have presence. Something that you cannot deny the 1er has lots of. Looks may be subjective but it is important to stand out , a job the F20 does indeed accomplish.

Inside Line : While the M135i won't be crossing the Atlantic in hatchback form, don't bet against a coupe version of the car eventually making the journey. BMW will debut the new 1 Series coupe next year, possibly as early as the 2013 Geneva Auto Show in March.

A debut next March is highly unlikely. 2 series coupe prototypes have not yet even been spotted.

Will have more on the anticipated start of production date for the 2 series, soon.

Exactly. People are thinking/hoping that the introduction of the "2-series" will be within half a year ever since the f20 was released, but its oh so unrealistic with not a single prototype out there ever spotted and a facelift for the e82/88 in 3/2012..

On the other hand I cannot believe that there's much r&d to be done apart from aerodynamics, I expect suspension etc. to be tweaked parts from the F20/21. So I believe (and hope) for a quick launch, latest Geneva 2013.
