The more I read, the more questions arise.
How does the "unexpected" demand for an LSD bode for the availability/affordability of that product? I like the fact that it's not "off the shelf," but is BMW going to ride this demand and hike the price? Or does the demand indicate that many buyers would find the car to be incomplete/inadequate without it, thus compelling BMW to offer it as soon as possible and at a reasonable price point, and/or possibly consider making it standard or a factory-installed option in the near future? |

In anticipation of ordering the 235i as my next car sometime soon, I drove an F30 today, here are my 2 cents.
Car I drove was the 2013 F30 335i Auto, XDrive, Loaded, and I was looking at some details pretty closely on it, and transcribing them to what I thought the M235i might be like. 1. Power: Everyone already knows the N55 motor, so it is nothing new. The 335 XDrive was definitely a dog, with the extra weight, larger size, and xdrive system bogging it down. Also was the 300Hp version. In summary, I think the 320 Hp tuned version, smaller car, and rwd, especially with a MT, or even auto, will be FUN!!! 2. Electric power steering: Is what it is. Don't expect the steering feel of an E82 or E46, it simply isn't there. That being said, I do expect it to be a little more agressive than the F30 for a couple reasons, The 3 is expected to be more luxurious and less of a driver's car, and no xdrive. So, while it wasnt the most welcomed thing ever, It really wasn't the absolute end of the world. Drove in comfort, sport, and sport +. 3. Exterior styling AMAZING 4. Interior styling: AMAZING 5. Interior quality: I expect the 2 to have very similar plastics to the F30, and the quality of the dash and doors was MUCH better than my 135i with the very hard plasticky junk. I definitely think this is going to be a home run car. I felt on the dash, not as soft as an e46 dash, but still nice and with some give to it, definitely not hard like the 1 series, and the doors by where the window meets the panel, same amount of give, very nice, and then the leather area on the door, very very plush. I was MUCH happier with the interior quality on the F30 vs the outgoing e9x/e82 generations. Worst interiors in bmw history, bar none. 6. Overall, I predict this to be a really, really awesome car, that outperforms the 1M, and is pretty much the best car bmw makes now. An m2 will be god-like.

Yes Scott, we get it .. M2 and X1M related in key areas means a shared four cylinder engine.
To the 87% of us who don't want a 4 cylinder M2, no point waiting any longer, put your orders in for the M235, it's the next best thing to a real inline 6 M2 that we won't get. |

Thanks Jason! I appreciate all the great questions you asked! You guys rock.
If the rev matching is not available, I wonder if it will for LCI? Jason or Scott, do you know if the M235i is heavier or lighter, or the same as the 135i? There are mixed reports! Good to see everyone wants LSD, makes me wonder if they are thinking about making it a factory option for LCI or something.

I guess you didnt read the same thing I did. Try again. Q: Should we expect an gran coupe or M2 model? A: Everything is possible. We will not let our folks down. We will have something that is really exciting. How you can determine this is an indicator that something WON'T be coming as an M2.... I just really don't know! I guess if they came out and said... We are 99% positive we will make an M2... you would be still saying that there is a possibility it wouldnt happen... Well.. in the meantime.. while you aren't sure.. . pick up an M235... Which is exactly what BMW wants people to do for awhile.. I would recommend a 24 month lease rather than 36 month lease however... ;-) Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 01-15-2014 at 06:10 PM.. |

Disappointing about the active sound. I mean I knew it would almost certainly have it, but I was still hoping it wouldn't.
Thats also interesting about the crankshaft. I always assumed the MX35i engine was mechanically identical to the standard N55. |

The M4 is the same width (73") as the E63 M6. It is 6" shorter and actually an inch taller. I don't know about you but that's a BIG, LONG, CAR. it's wheelbase is a whopping 110", which is 2" longer than an E90 and 6" longer than the 1M. Exterior length ... Compared to a 1M, the M4 is a FOOT LONGER. It won't even fit in the same ( read: my) garage space as an E36 M3, E46 M3, or a 1M. There cars are NOT that similar. and all this is s before we start talking the 15K price difference..... Most people don't cross shop cars 15K apart. |

+1. just need to post it a lot more places so that some of the 6 cylinder crowd can " recognize"...

Just realize that there are many many many E30 M3 enthusiasts that reject the 1M as any successor to the ORIGINAL M3. That car... the E30 M3 ... . a 2 door, short wheelbase, lightweiight M car designed for racing, with a 4 cylinder motor that sounds incredible... ( something which bimwads with inline-6-on-the-brain feel is somehow impossible... ) has yet to have a true successor.. and now.... it's time. Of course... DIE HARD fans of the E30 M3 will still reject it..... " it's heavier... it wasnt designed for racing... it 's got a TURBO motor and ELECTRIC STEERING for chrisssake" but that's because they are frozen in the past..... along with a bunch of 6 cylinder fans... And maybe it's a good thing the M4 came along because certainly it's size and dimensions are NOTHING near what the E30 M3 was... But that's ok.. there is plenty of time for you to learn.... I would like more information on these ring times and comparisons to 1M.
Tires and weather conditions on both cars laps. Was this an M235i w the LSD option or not? What about the drivers? Somehow this doesn't add up.

Heavier by 150+ lbs
M235 is heavier.
Both the 135 and M235 configurations are up on BMW USA. You can easily check the curb weights: M235: 3505 lbs (both Auto and Manual) 135is: 3373 lbs (Manual), 3439 lbs (Auto) So the Auto is 65lbs heavier, the manual is 132 lbs heavier.

CAMSHAFT, not crankshaft! Two very different engine parts! Q: What improvements were made to the N55 engine for the M235i application, if any? A: It's a normal N55 engine, but receives an enforced camshaft (cast iron was replaced by steel), adjusted software engine mapping, and improved cooling system. Quote:

Honestly, I think we are just about to the point (if we aren't there already) of rigidity being a diminishing return when it comes to handling. |

I dont know it just doesnt add up. What transmission was used in the M235i? Let's remember the 1M is stick only.
1m was more powerful and lighter... I don't know how stiff that chassis would need to be to beat the 1M. There is something we aren't being informed of here. Also, the 1M was an actual M car and was marketed as such, this is an M line car... Some sort of twisted marketing is going on here.
