Meaningless. BMW also trademarked Z2 about 7 years ago. As some of us know, the Z2 was ki-bashed.

Too bad the 1 is becoming FWD. Everybody else is making that anyway, if we want a FWD we can buy an Audi or a Mini. RWD is a major reason we buy a bimmer. 2 could be a 1-sportscoupe, like the 6 and 8-series is a variation of the 5 or 7 series.

Another reason to hang on to the E82 if you love it, who knows what the future holds and it will probably be pretty unique compared to the new cars BMW will give us as replacements.

Dazzler, that pic is borderline NSFW. Wowza.

Let me guess, the 2 is going to be either hybrid or a crossover, because that's what trendy soccer moms want. Lately BMW hasnt been building for the enthusiast base that literally built their business, and it's pretty damned irritating.

You didn't read SCOTT's comments above did you?

Either way, it's true that trademarks get registerd all the time with no firm product plans behind them or just to make sure that competitors don't snap them up. However, SCOTT also said above that BMW is seriously considering the renaming the RWD 1 series models to the 2 series.

I predicted this months ago.

Makes sense, coupes/convertibles tend to have even numbers in BMW's lineup.

They thought about splitting the 3 Series into the the 3 and 4 Series, but never did.

Mee. Ning. Less.

It was also heavily rumored that BMW all but set to name the E93/E93 the 4 series. Like even going as far as trademarking/registering the 4 series. Didn't happen.

Right, yes, I remember those rumors very well.

The thing you seem to be ignoring is that SCOTT's an insider, so if he says BMW is considering it, then they are. That doesn't mean that they will do it for sure, but the point is that the whole trademark thing itself is not the strongest evidence being presented here. Rather SCOTT's comment is. You could discount his comment outright too, sure. But he's left similar ones all over this forum so that's going to be a lot of "Meaningless."-type posts for you to work through. Nevermind the fact that many of things he has said have already come to pass.

In the ramp up to the 2003 launch of the BMW 6er, marketing decided to introduce continuity to the portfolio of coupes.
Since the 6er was replacing the 8er and becoming BMW's flagship Coupe.
The onus was on the coupe based models of the 1er and 3er (still in the design process) to seperate them from their relevant "Odd" number counterparts.

For a couple of years or so the onus was on moving the 1er coupe to 2er and moving the 3er to the 4er. Since the outcome was that both ideas where voted down due to the apparent fact of the M3 issue. The only evidence of the proposed strategy is apparent when you look at the E92 before the facelift. It is not a 2dr E90 everything about that car is completely different , design wise , they share nothing in sheetmetal either.

Seperating the Coupe and Cabrio by not making them automatically descendants from the E90 has proved to be advantageous for BMW.
As the E92/E93 is the best selling 3er Coupe/Cabrio to date.
The same strategy of seperating the car design wise from the upcoming F30 will also become apparent with BMW invoking a premium feel that will bring the car in line with the new 6er Coupe to stand out just as the E92/E93 had done.

The 2er was intended because we wanted to show that the car was a direct descendant of the 2002 , especially for the US market who have a relationship with the old 2002. When I first seen the full claymodel design in Munich it was badged 235i.
Why the decision has arisen again is due to the current model strategy.
Between now and 2015 , BMW will launch twenty new models.
To reflect the projections of future growth on the Citycar segment , Premium Compact and Premium Entry. The majority of the new models will be based on the 1er/3er matrix.

And because there will be several Premium Compact additions.
The current strategy is to whether seperate the Coupe (F22) and Cabrio
(F23) models of the 1er from the Sporthatch and it's forthcoming counterparts that will join the 1er. It is being looked at to seperate the sporty models from the regular models in which - 2er will compliment the Coupe , Cabrio and the Z2 Roadster and Coupe, Whilst 1er will maintain the Sporthatch , CST, GT etc.

The Z2 Roadster and Coupe are needed by BMW to offer a Compact sporting concept similar to the MINI Coupe and Roadster. The aim is to offer sporting dynamics that equal or better cars that are twice the cost of it for a specific price.
Weight is the key priority hence why the car will go no further than a four cylinder. As for the Z2 The Brand requires it.

LOL. There are no "insiders" from NA or AG posting anything on any forum. Trust me on this. They (BMW) monitor these forums heavily and the second any product information is leaked, the person responsible for leaking it will be fired within 24 hours. Just look at the fiasco with the E90 brochure leaked back in 2004. That wasn't even in ENGLISH.

Nothing I've seen posted here isn't available to the general automotive press. Especially the blurb about the Z2. That rumor has also come and been put to rest.

I also predicted the use of magnetic valves (valvetronic) back in 2000, "released" the HP and torque ratings of M54, N52 and N54 engines back in 2000, and a slew of my predictions about future BMW products have come true as well, it doesn't make me more of a BMW "insider" than the next HACK.
