Might buy an M240i today - new to BMW - advice please

Hello everyone,

I am considering buying an 2019 BMW M240i X-drive. Car has 57K on it and is a 2 owner car. Autocheck report looks fine. 1 minor accident which does not bother me. This would be a new daily driver. I currently daily drive a 2002 Mercedes CLK55 AMG and also have a 2006 E55 AMG. Love the CLK but it is old and really need something fresher.
I love the B58 engine. I rented a X3 M40i a few years ago and it was a blast.
Just trying to get an thoughts on reliability at this mileage. I tend to keep cars a long time....not sure I will if I buy this.
The car is at CarMax and I can get a Maxcare warranty for up to 5 years or 100k miles (I drive 5-6k a year). It is $3700 with $500 deductible or $4100 with $300 deductible. I am leaning towards getting the warranty as this is this a way more modern car compared to what I am used to.
When I bought my CLk55 in 2008 I got an extended warranty and it paid for itself with one dealer visit.
The only issue is I cannot transfer the warranty if I sell the car.

Thanks for any input! Very exciting.

nice car, it's a blast to drive, I have a 230 vert

word to the wise, if you can get a warrantee get it, BMW's are expensive to repair, and you dont wanna be playing, bouncing car back and worth to the shop on YOUR DIME.

I'm on BMW number 2, first one I used the x'warrantee at least 4-5 times, bought on 22k took it to 120k

I just bought the ext, warrantee for mine my 4 year runs out on the 29th, around 3.5k + tax, I charged to my business account.

I have LED adaptive, there about 4k a pop.

BUT anything other than the BMW w'tee is a waste of time, they do platinum, gold and just powertrain, if you wanna sleep at night, get it.

Warrantee's on NEWER BMW's are a must, it has nothing to do with maintenance or how you look after your car but the electronic which can fail.

On my 1 series, the comfort access died, dont ask me how much to fix it, because I traded it in due to w'tee being over and getting the 2 series

that said, do your due dilligence but the m240 is a great car you'll bloody well enjoy the balls off that thing

IMHO, I dont touch accident damaged cars unless its windscreen or proof positive what the damage was

Thanks for the replies. I bought the car. I just could not pass it up. Such a fun car, yet quite comfortable as well. I bought the warranty - also hard to pass up. Up to 5 years or 100k miles for $3700 with $500 deductible. I feel like in this day and age a 5 year warranty from a 3rd party on a BMW that is 4 years old would be $8k. I have heard a lot of good things about CarMax's Maxcare.
The only issue I discovered is drivers side mirror turn signal is not working. So I have to bring it back for that. I think it is an element as opposed to a bulb.

Man the Msport exhaust is stellar!

Cheers!

Congrats and welcome to the forums. There's a lot of knowledge on here for little issues you may run across and some big ones too. If you haven't noticed, the 3 series side of this forum has more people and our cars are similar enough that a lot of things carry over.

I'm sure you'll have tons of fun with the car.

Nice ride and congrats. It looks like the prior owner, at minimum, made some mild modifications including aftermarket wheel caps and side view mirror caps. I would bet that they pinched a wire when installing a mirror cap and severed the LED turn signal wire.

As for the warranty, if it were me, I'd ask for my money back. These cars are quite reliable and also pretty easy to service yourself. They also share parts with the 3 and 4 series and parts prices aren't crazy.

I've owned my 2016 M235 since new. The only parts that failed on it was a $30 windshield washer pump at 7 years and the OEM battery at 7.5 years. Everything else has just been maintenance and preventative maintenance stuff ($500 front rotors/pads, $100 belt tensioner and belt, $30 coolant line, $30 coolant change, $80 spark plugs, cabin filter, and oil/filter changes), everything done by me. My story isn't different from most on this forum.

I'd also kill those P Zero tires with fire, especially if they're fun flats. Terrible tire. They don't anything well except wear extremely fast.

Lucky you, my 2018 m240i that I bought 2 years ago, water pump leak coolant. Had it serviced at indy, costed me 600 + 150 for diagnostic . Also my rear turn signal is fuked. But other than that its been stellar.

Thanks for the info - especially on the mirror caps. As I barley know these cars I can now see after looking at a stock mirror cap online. And I figured those wheels center caps were not stock. The previous owner also has the same aftermarket cap on the hood and trunk. I might return to stock, not sure.

I agree on the P Zero tires. Luckily they are not run flats. They are P Zero All Season Plus. My E55 came with these same tires and I was not a fan. I would probably go with Conti DWS or Michelin PSs.

I need to get proper OEM floor mats cause the ones in the car don't fit and clearly are just some crappy ones the dealer probably threw in the car.

I am still on the fence about the warranty. I can get prorated refund anytime they say. So after a year I can cancel and get money back.

You might be surprised - the genuine BMW carpet mats are not what they once were, but there are options.

Welcome and congrats on the 240! I have a 2019 as well but in RWD. Had the car for about 2.5 years. Absolutely no issues aside from a malfunctioning rear turn signal which the dealer replaced the taillight assembly under warranty. You will love this car.
