I've had my M235i for nearly 2.5 years now, and it has been bulletproof. I've never taken it to the dealer for anything but scheduled service, and once a flat tire.

I got my 16 M235i in May and at around 1100 miles it left me stranded when the front electronics module failed. Dealership was great about it. On a holiday weekend they made sure to get me a loaner fast and it has been fine ever since. They replaced the FEM and the battery under warranty, and sent a check in the mail for the inconvenience caused.

I've had my 6 speed 228i for 2+ years now. bulletproof as well. only "issues" have been:
* 3 new RFT (I have mixed feelings on these - I can't "feel" the difference between RFT and normal tires, but I will say it's been helpful to be able to drive for 50 miles after the tires have gone flat. That said, the downside is they're never in stock unless you to go to BMW service which I don't, as I bought tire insurance through Mr. Tire and it normally takes 1-2 days. Whether or not those tires never would have gone flat had they been non-RFT is another story) * burnt out right blinker * I also tried the muffler delete when I first got the car - IMO, it sounded terrible and I put it back on the next day. Not the car's fault I'm an idiot (I know a lot of people love the muffler delete though). that's it... sad to turn it back in, but i'm excited about either the M2, or more likely, the M240 Last edited by bubsterino; 10-28-2016 at 10:51 AM.. My 2016 228i Convertible with 9000K miles....

Other than the car has been great. I literally had my first service today with just about 9000K miles. The service of course was free. However, the dealer charged $74.00 for a tire rotation and balance. My butt still hurts. Last edited by kevlac; 10-28-2016 at 12:56 PM.. |

It's not possible to get 100K mile data out of this generation of BMWs for the simple reason that they haven't been around long enough. BUT, comparing the first three years of this generation to the first three years of the previous generation, BMW has made simply stunning leaps in initial quality, and that certainly bodes well for how the cars will age. The first few years of the e9x and e8x were pretty much nightmares, especially the turbo cars. My simple by comparison lightly optioned e91 wagon had several warranty issues, and had to be towed to the dealer once in it's first year or two on the road (and no issues since). My M235i has been perfect. No issues of any kind in 18mo/12K despite being a far more complex car. I don't doubt that my BMWs will need little more than "routine maintenance" in 170K either - but there is more to maintain on a more sophisticated car.

I have had 2 I would say minor issues.
1- My nav system would reset once in a while. This would happen on startup, it would boot up, there would be 3 pops on the speakers, and it would reset. It would keep doing this for a few minutes until it was fully up. They replaced the radio/computer etc. 2- There was a noise coming from one of the front wheels when turning. They replaced my front wheel bearings. Other than that, the only thing I had gone in for was oil changes and I had complained about some squeaks and rattles but nothing huge.

14k miles in almost two years.
Two wheel center caps went missing/fell out. Solid otherwise. Knock on wood but I've had one bad experience in 5 bmws. Engine blew in a 2003 M3 at 52k miles due to a known issue. Bmw paid for it. I've also been pretty good about going above the required maintenance requirements/warming up the car properly and being aware of road imperfections to avoid. |

2015 M235xi purchased new on 10/2/2014 as my daily driver.
I have 61,000 miles on it as of today and not a single issue to report. I plan to keep this car 5 years/150K miles. I've already performed the following services: -automatic transmission fluid drain/fill and pan/filter replacement -coolant flush -differential fluids (front/rear) replacement -transfer case fluid replacement -new Bosch spark plugs -new M brake pads@ 52,000 miles -oil/filter change every 6,000 miles No tune or suspension mods yet but I do have a summer wheel set (BBS Ch-Rs and Pole Position tires). I eventually plan to upgrade the suspension with Dinan sport springs and bumper stops. And probably a Dinan sport piggy back. Either the $300 model or stage 1 or 2. Best car I've ever owned. |

I had my 2016 M235 for 10 months and 8,500 miles until last week when it threw the P0171 code which is "Bank 1 - System Too Lean". The car ran fine with the code. My Torque app showed it as a historic code. I took it to BMW and the DME basically showed the same thing. All systems checked out fine. There was a DME update which was installed and the code hasn't reappeared after 4 days. Fingers are crossed.

Been happy for two years until I had the drivetrain malfunction today. Good thing it is still under warranty.

I had clutch & flywheel worn out at about 16k miles. The dealership charged me $4800 for replacement (standard price in Canada). They didn't investigate thoroughly why those components failed, instead they chose to gouge me even though I was their returning customer. I know how to drive manual cars and I didn't abuse my M235i, therefore I suspect a factory defect (of course they ignored all my arguments and driving history as well). Needless to say I am not buying another BMW (or any expensive manual-transmission car in general) because of all the pain and stress I went through. And I live in fear that my current clutch will fail soon prompting another inevitable financial rape which means I can forget about dynamic driving.

Had a ASS glitch 3 months in. Was sitting at stop light which then turned green. When I depressed the clutch the engine is supposed to start but didn't. Had to press the main power button several time before the thing "resets" and I was able to start the car again.

2015 M235xi with 8000mi. Last week I noticed the little green lights the show if you in drive or park etc. stop working after I put it in drive. When I start the car the park green light is on, then if I put in reverse it also shows, but soon as I put it in drive its gone and stays gone on park an reverse until I restart my car. Always goes away when I put in drive tho. Told the dealer and there ordering me a new shiftier this week. They couldnt give me ann explanation, just shit happens.. Warrenty covered ofcourse. Other than that car has had no engine problems. 1 flat tire and a clicking sound from front brake that just needed to be cleaned.

2.5 Years.
I get random Chassis Stability Malfunction errors (they go away after I turn off the car and on again) and I think my windshield wipers are stuttering. I'll bring it up at my next oil change in a few weeks. Only changed the exhaust to M Perf exhaust and wheels to square set up. I've also had 5 tires to be replaced... 4 of them all developed bubbles on the side wall (Maybe the set I got were defective..? The potholes here hasn't caused issues with my other car's tires) and one of them started leaking air. |

- favor OEM wheels that aren't strong enough to handle sharp impacts - favor OEM tires (particularly RFTs) that don't provide enough impact cushioning and shock dispersion - Favor OEM suspension settings (spring rate/shock valving) that are too soft/easy to compress. Also, FYI: I've had a bubble in my right rear OEM RFT for nearly a year now. Almost time to replace the tire (tread's at 4/32), thankfully; will happen in about a month. It's a very common occurrence.

Zero issues, absolutely bulletproof in 3 years of hard driving, autocrossing, and track days. Also: most of those miles the car's been FBO.

Did the dealership pay for these, or was it cost to you (and how many miles on them - assume you didn't hit real high miles in 2/5 yrs)?
