I like the grandiose personalities of people who think they can say BMW got their naming scheme wrong. Even more so the ones that feel they know so much better than BMW what a M stands for that they debadge.

In any event I couldn't care less what the car's called, doesn't make it any more or less enjoyable.

Once they introduce the X4 version, X6 version and a few others coming this will be a non issue. People resist change.

This has bothered me just a little since day 1. BMW named the car not me, my only complaint is I dont need so much on the rear deck, so I just left the ///m and took every other badge off. Putting an "s" on the end is worse than adding m badges that didn't come from the factory, IMO. You are just so dedicated to BMW that you are doing them a favor and correcting their mistake. NO. As others have said M--- cars have existed before, this is nothing new. If you don't like it debadge it, but trust me no one sees a 235is and says "wow that guy is a real enthusiast." BMWs press release for the 235 simply says this (M---i) is the new and more performance oriented branding which replaces the "is". No one is trying to pass the car off as a real M, that being said the car performs incredibly stock (very close to e9x M) and with a few mods is probably faster than 99% of cars on the road. While they are more or less on even ground (m--- v. "is") its marketing. Maybe all the 4 series owners should remove the 4 and add a 3 because it USED TO BE the 3-series couple. Shit, maybe we should just badge ours as 135is because that is what it is replacing right W3rkn (its hilarious everyone calls you twerkin). All they are saying is the car is a 2 series optioned the way an enthusiast would do it. I love that only people who care know what the car is. Most people don't know and I've run into BMW enthusiasts that aren't even aware that the car is out yet, so everyone just needs to relax. End of rant.
On another note do you think they will eventually offer just a 235i when the M2 comes out?

I've seen a few debadge jobs around these parts. Let me say emphatically, these folks are the most self conscious posers. It creates absolute ambiguity! Self conscious about the silly M, or even the 235, so they remove it to be ambiguous. Possibly narcissist because all it does it create more attention. People look at it and stare trying to figure out WTF it is. Now I'll step off the soapbox. |

My not caring what the car is called and debadging have literally nothing to do with one another. Was just saying that for those that do care it's an easy mod.

The M235i is the only car (other than proper M cars) that comes with PSS (non-RFT) tires and optional moonroof delete....thats M enough for me

Add me as another person that the name worked on. As a former Audi driver, I didn't know much about true M cars, "is" cars or anything else aside from knowing that true M cars are pretty badass looking and performing. When I was looking for to get a new car, I looked at BMW's website and saw the attractive lease prices on the 2 and 3 Series and as I scrolled down a bit, saw the M235i for not much more. If it was just a 235i, I most likely wouldn't even have taken notice or looked into the car any further to find out how good it actually is...the "M" made me take notice and I started doing some research to find the car sounded perfect.

I don't like the M designation because it's not an M car. It should have been named 235i because that's what it is. The M235i designation is used to simply charge a higher price or trick consumers.

the only "issue" so to speak of that i see with the name is that there seems to be some kind of elitism about it, in HK at least...there's a 'M135i/M235i owners club', no love for equally enthusiastic F20/F22 owners who can't afford the 'M' model? bet there wouldn't be quite as much interest were they just called the 135i and 235i... you don't see 335i/435i owners' clubs around...

Name is what BMW gave it. Much like the name given by a parent of child. Could not see any controversey here. No one forced us to buy it and you knew the name before turning the key after paying the cost of the car.
