Did BMW underrate the horsepower rating for the 228i?
Curb weight~ 3200lbs
240HP (underrated by BMW, independent tests show more around 270HP) 0-60 in 4.9s (as tested by Car and Driver) M-Sport package gets most of the same goodies as the M235i. These specs are equal to or better than the E36 M3. Quoted by this article

That's optimistic. GSR Autosport weighed their 228i which was specifically optioned to be as light as possible, and they got 3189 lbs with about 2/3 full tank. The weights from the various reviews I've seen so far are:
Motor Trend: 3334 lbs. Edmunds: 3344 lbs. Car & Driver: 3353 lbs. |

Just compare the wHP from various dynos to other engines rated in that range, and that should tell the story. For example, with regards to the M235i rated at 322hp, dynos show ~305hp. Compare that to a Hyundai Genesis 3.8 AT which is rated at 348hp but shows ~275hp on a dyno. "Real" hp is unknown, but that's 30 more hp to the wheels and that's what really counts. A good comparison for the 228i would be the Genesis 2.0, which is rated at 270hp. Or something with GM's 2.0T which is also rated in the 270hp range.

It's not the horsepower... It's the torque.

It seems BMW does have a tendency to underrate, but C&D also uses a roll out when testing 0-60, so it brings the published times down compared to other testers. They have posted the fastest 0-60 for the M235i using the same methodology.
I'd guess it's overrated but I'd also guess it's unrealistic to expect to consistently replicate C&D's results or to come to a conclusion on HP using independent dyno testing. Bottom line is, the car's a decent bargain, whatever the true numbers. |

GSR Autosport dynoed their 228 race project while still stock and saw 233 HP at the rear wheel. Assumeing a rather conservative 10% powertrain loss thats 256 at the crank. Powertrain losses are i'm betting more like 15% so that would be 267 at the crank. Yea, I'd say BMW is really conservative

Whatever it is, I love my 228! I road tested an Audi A3 which is rated at 220Hp and similar weight, and my 228 feels significantly faster. The extra gears help, but the engine just seems a lot stronger. I traded in a GenV GTI and the Audi didn't feel much stronger than the GTI. So says my extremely accurate butt dyno!

I saw one of the car magazines did a Dyno on a 328 when they tested it against the Caddy ATS 2.0 and it was 258 I believe. This was about a year ago.

That being said, I'd be perfectly fine withe 228i if the m235i did not exist. Stout motor with plenty of power in a dd.

its probably more like 270 hp.
i've got a 328i so same engine. http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/t...illac-ats.html cadillac ATS and 328i dyno charts in there. ATS , GM says has 272hp , and the dyno shows they put down about the same at the wheel |

I think the 3189lb is probably with a manual transmission. So the question remains, is the manual in the 228 as good as the one in the M235i? I wish I had a chance to drive a manual because the lighter the better. |
