I wouldn't know what the real E36 M3 is like considering we got the underpowered version.

When I drove this car it pretty much felt like my 135is except the steering feel was different. Also it felt a bit softer than the is.

Nice to finally see a 1 Series owner compare the 2.

Would you say the 135is feels more BMWish?

The N55 really makes comparison almost impossible. Relating to the E36 seems like only dimension based thing. The E36 is lower and not as tall overall. You sit lower and tighter and the M3 had proper seats and a proper NA engine and stock LSD.

One thing that the E36 does really well is steering feel. It's so connected. Anyone drawing comparisons should drive an E36 again to remember how good it is.

Also, I question the journalistic credibility of anyone suggesting a turbo engine "doesn't feel" like a turbo. I should also add, to M's credit entirely, that the S50B32 made similar HP on 1atm. No forced induction and similar displacement.

Euro s50b32 had 321 bhp..

US s52 had "240"... I owned 2 and they were both around 255 crank on a dyno.

No doubt, I belive it's still the best handling M3. Let's see what the F80s will be like

You don't have to guess anything. He is in the UK and Auto Express is a UK publication.

Surely you jest......

Each iteration of the 3 series has had a better suspension than the previous version, allowing for more grip.

E21 < E30 < E36 < E46 < E90 < F30

what car do you think Bimmerworld and Turner motorsport will run this year? It won't be an F30 just because it's NEW...... but because their testing has shown that the chassis and suspension are better.

In the case of the E46.... it did take a few years of development getting weight out of the chassis... and TMS ran the E36 325s for a little longer... but clearly the E46 325s outpaced the E36 325s they ran in Speed World Challenge etc
