M2 Projected Release Date/Year?

Title speaks for itself...
It took about 3 years for the 1M to hit the market...how long do you think the M2 will be? M235i looks beautiful, and I can't imagine what the M2 will look like!!!

N55 would certainly make it worse than the 1M, but the N54 is what they are using in the new M3. Certainly can't have the same engine in the cheap car.

Definitely put themselves in a hole here, but then again I've seen nothing definitive that a 2M is even coming out.

my 135is lease ends in the Fall of 2015, after which point buying out the 135is, getting a 1M, or ordering an M2 are basically the top 3 options at this time.....mayyyyyybe an F80 M3 in that list too, however i think it's sort of 'too much car' for my tastes.

i REALLY hope that Ian is right and that mid-2015 is the target time for the M2. If it is, it will add a nice option to my very short list of viable desires. I really don't like the M235i, but i LOVE that clip of the M235 racing.....and am hoping the M2 is more like that and obviously a continuation of the fantastic 1M.

The new engine in the M3/M4 is the S55, as mentioned above.

If only it would be a 300+ HP N/A motor then we would really be on to something, but I doubt we will get that lucky.

Better atleast be an I6 of some type.

Anyone notice the S55 engine pics on the F80 m3/m4 strongly resembles (layout wise anyway) the N55?

yep...the new M3's engine is basically an N55 with another turbo slapped on and then called an S55! So i'm pretty sure the M2 will have an N55.........assuming an M2 even exists.......

either way i'm glad the Ms are switching to turbos. LOVE ME SOME BOOST!

My vote is that it's on a lame turbo 4 banger. ///M and turbo's shouldn't go together in my opinion.

Eh, I don't like the way the M3 sounded when I heard it in person. Sounded really farty, to use a technical term. I like the sound of the N55 + PE much better. Obviously, the performance on that engine is much better though and is one sexy hell of an engine bay, too.

Yeah I'm aware. My point was more that it is a twin turbo setup. It leaves them in an awkward position as you either make a car that is intentionally gimped and worse than the 1M, or you make a car which is just better than the version that is more expensive.

I don't see them making an M2, and if they do it'll likely be limited production like the 1M. There's just not really room in the product range for it and I suspect that's why they called the 235i the M235i, because its a sort-of-but-not-really M car that performs well.

I agree. I just think it's going to be really hard for them performance-wise and price-wise to slot an M2 between an M235 and an M4. And if they do, it'll cut deeply into sales of a 435. So, I think they've painted themselves into a weird corner and like you, I think they kinda split the difference and decided to call it the M235i then which basically is the same as a 135 with the PPK. Perhaps they'll just make a special version that has a small performance bump and cost $5k more? M235is?

Well, given the critical reception and brisk sales of the 1M (plus bmw and M's comments on the matter), it's virtually a lock that the vehicle will be offered. In what capacity remains to be seen, of course. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 360~hp variant of the N55 thrown into the vehicle. Couple that with some more weight saving measures and we may see a decent successor.

Of course, the electric steering rack will be the big letdown, but that's how it's gonna be.

on one hand you say N/A engines are the best......then the single turbo N55 which behaves MORE like an N/A engine you call 'gimped'....which it is actually not, unless one modifies stuff. Then you call the S55 the same as the N54, which it is NOT....it's actually a lot more like the N55.

For my interests and application, NA is definitely best. Not sure why you think the engine with more lag is more NA like.

The S55 N54 comment was in reference to the twin turbo setup, which is almost always more exploitable for power.
