From time to time, BMW trademark filings provide clues on future BMW models. Our latest finding could be related to the recent speculation coming from both Autobild and SCOTT26. BMW is said to be considering launching a 2-series line comprising of the 2-series coupe (F22), the 2-series convertible (F23) and M-variants of these cars. These are essentially the next generation 1-series coupe and convertible, but renamed as the 2-series.

As seen in the screenshots from the German patent office below, BMW has filed "M2" and "BMW M2" trademarks just a month ago. The same goes for the US patent and trademark office (USPTO) where BMW has filed the "M2" trademark. It's important to note that a trademark filing doesn't necessarily mean they'll actually use it for a model. It is however a telling sign that BMW is considering the M2 badge seriously enough to take first measures to protect the use of this name.

The 1-series M coupe has been welcomed with nothing but praise from both owners and reviewers around the globe. No surprise then that is has perhaps already made a case for a successor. Our prediction may be premature yet, but we believe it will be called the BMW M2.

Hopefully it'll have the same bulging wheel arches as the 1M.

So, when are we going to have the M versions of the BMW motorcycles?

Haha. Not sure we need an M version of the S1000RR. People are just gonna puke from the sheer driving insanity from that bike instead of sheer driving pleasure.

Coincidently, BMW registered S600RR awhile ago, and BMW has said that they have no intention to build a 600, they said that it would take to much to engineer one, just as much as did to engineer the S1000RR, so therefore it is not financially feasible for a 600...so they say...

Well I think I'm right about bmws new approach to their numbering system: with odds being certain models (sedans, wagons) and evens with the others (coupe, convertibles).

My other concern is my 1 series being mistaken of as a FWD car in the future.

At lease our 1 series m coupe will have two more cylinders and such a great package.

Is anyone wondering if they new 2 series coupe will be more expensive than a current 1 series coupe?

This idea is not new, there was speculation back when the E92 3 series coupe and the 1 series coupe came out, that they were going to be called 4 series and 2 series, respectively
