Thanks for the post. In the real world where it matters most the M235i represents an amazing package of capability for the price - I L O V E I T ! A proper sporting capable car that does business well. Very well in fact.

M4 $65k base
M235I $44k base $21k difference ...apples to oranges every way you look at it If the two cars are free, I'll pick the M4 without even thinking about it

The marginal difference in capability isnt worth half that. Which is why the author chose the M235i. For loaded M4 money I will be looking at a much different badge and vehicle configuration. It would not be a BMW!!

i suppose next year i could afford an m4 or something, but i just don't see it being worth that much more money.
i have a friend who is buying a yas marina f80 m3 in 2015 (when i plan on getting probably a m235). and he and i have been over this argument tons of times. i could afford an m3, its not really a matter of if you could, but if its worth the money. we make about the same money and i guess its all about priorities. i'd almost assuredly get an automatic, and i know my friend is getting a DCT. m235i which has DHP standard and a "free auto" transmission is $43k. an m3/m4 with DHP and DCT (i know its different, but its the "auto") is $68k. is the m3/m4 worth $25k, i guess it depends on if you want that $25k for other things. personally in LA i would guess it probably isn't unless you track your car a lot (which my friend i doubt will. but hey its a "real M"). I'd rather blow that $25k on rent, or vacations etc. my friend lives with his parents and never goes out. everyones got priorities, i'm sure we'll both be happy with our choices. |

The best BMW I ever owned was 1981 323i Alpina when I lived in Germany. The M235i has best that car and with the performance and styling upgrades available the M235i is a true bargin sports car.
The only car on the horizon I can see that might best both these for the money is the upcoming Porsche 718 Turbo, mainly due to weight-to-power ratio. With the way the auto industry is changing, my 2016 model sports car may be the last I own as autonomous cars are inching closer to reality. |

Agreed. When you get to the M4's price bracket, I'd be looking at a Cayman or an Evora.

If we buy cars for bargain, we all be driving prius or taking the bus/train. We buy what we can afford and what suits us.
We all love our m235i but to say you wouldnt take the M4 is just plain silly and biased. If the M3 price range wasnt that far from the m235i, I would of own that car...no contest

Drove a 4 series before the 2 series. Absolutely hated the size of the car. The M235i is a true BMW sized sports car IMO. Would pick the M2 over M4 even if it cost a bit more.

You telling me the M235i is the better car cuz its more of a bargain and not that the M235i is the better car. We can all afford the M4 but I too choice the m235i cuz its a better bargain and "suits" me more...but I cant deny that the M4 is the better car So back to the car review, this isnt a financial magazine but a car enthusiast mag so lets not compare cars for better bargain..comon now
