Highly unlikely it is a "total engine failure". Some sort of computer/electrical issue is much more likely. This is why new cars come with warranties. Sucks, but sheisse happens. Presumably BMW will reimburse you for the tow, and provide you with a loaner while they sort it out.
Better now than at 50001 miles.
