They are literally opened up, they ground out a pin on the circuit board of the ecu that deletes everything then they load up the oem software along with the tune. A UK tuner has developed something for the Tricore ECU's that involves installing a bypass board into the ECU which then allows remapping access through the OBD port. They can now remap the F-Series diesels, and the petrol M135/M235 will be available shortly.
Sounds intriguing and maybe they would be open to a US franchise...??
