I would say, if you can't tell the difference on a test drive, get the 228i. From what I have gathered from the internets, the m235i would get you the 6cyl and maybe a little better steering and suspension tuning, but is a little more nose heavy. For a daily, it probably doesn't matter, for the track, it may change the characteristics.
