We shall see, but it won't surprise me if new hardware accompanies iDrive 5. And if iDrive 5 can't be implemented with a software-only update, very doubtful that you'll be able to get CarPlay with a software update. Highly unlikely that BMW would try to integrate CarPlay into the old iDrive setup.
