Very few people want a sedan that small. See lack of sales success for the Cadillac ATS as evidence, despite glowing reviews. The 3-series is NOT a large car, and really the biggest issue is that BMW can't make a car smaller than that for cheaper enough to be able to sell it for enough less in the US. The 2-series coupe is just about exactly the same price range as a 3-series already, a 2-series sedan would have to be much cheaper.

If you want an e46, just buy an e46, plenty of nice ones out there.
