In original ideas the headlights did extend to the grille. The new grille conforms to the current BMW appearance in that it is almost three dimensional from the edges.

It's not an awful design , its is function over form. And relevant to pedestrian and front crumple zone safety. It also allows for cheaper repair costs in light accidents. The 2er although it is arriving to the market was designed in late 2008 so it conforms to engineering of the 1er which meant that these areas had to be accommodated for safety issues.

The new 7er is a later car and some bonus safety technology will be available with that car.
