It's surprisingly difficult to option one past $54k.
Metallic paint and a premium package(all the options I, personally, could ever want or need) bring it to $46,875. In relative terms that seems fairly reasonable. Add 2-3k for xDrive? And with a little patience an M235i can be had however you want it. Mostly.
I think the N54 and N55's torque delivery is what is responsible for their ever impressive acceleration numbers, again in relative terms.
C&D is just the control in this experiment. It being .4 slower than the E92 M3 and .4 faster than the the 135i is completely acceptable to me.
People are really gonna shit when C&D measures the 228i at ~4.7/8.
