Except the S class does not sell well. Bland driving machines like the Camry do.
Ultimately, BMW wants to be more Toyota/Lexus like because as you pointed out, that sells (guess who was the sales leader in the luxury segment until a tsunami took out their production?).
My point here is that just because more customers buy something doesn't mean it is "better" and in BMW's case, it is sad.
