I've started about 6-7 months ago. Need to be really active to upgrade troops and get resources. Most people attack, make more troops and repeat without closing the app. I don't have patience so I would use gems to speed up the troop making process. But, try to save your gems in the beginning to get more workers early in the game. I also spent $10 initially to get another extra worker. It speeds up building and upgrading.
Also, complete quest to earn resources and rewards for gems.
