I think my stock N55 sounds better than my 335is, even though it's much quieter. An N55 with a loud exhaust should be exactly my kind of car (I've never heard an M135i or any N55 with performance exhaust in person). I got a really short lease on my 335is specifically so I could swap into either an M235i or an M2 in about two years.
I came from a 135i and I feel the same way as the other guy about my 335is, it's a great car but it's definitely much lazier and less willing to change direction compared to the shorter 1 series.
