Well it's tiny fractions of an inch of clear coat coming off every time you machine it.. so once will cause irreversable damage if you want to think of it that way.

You can go down the paint thickness gauge rabbit hole if you're worried about that kind of stuff but I haven't seen BMW clear coats fail like mid 2000 Civics.
