I have thought a lot about the "new car smell" and honestly I am more than happy that there isn't one! (Still waiting on my car to arrive) and one of the main reasons is that new materials often off-gas and can be volatile. This could lead to future health issues if inhaled in our system for a long period of time. I would much prefer a air freshener to scent up the car than the new smell of glues and adhesives etc.

I remember when Steve Jobs passed away and people were linking the fact that California laws allowed "new car" purchases to go without a plate for the first 6 months and Jobs used that to his benefit and made a lease agreement with Mercedes to lease him a brand new unit every 6 months. In essence he is breathing volatile contents into his system for years non ending which may contribute to his passing. But that's just ones opinion and I find that true. Would you sleep in a bedroom that is freshly painted with extremely high volatile content in the air? I wouldn't!
