It's more about how they can make a 350hp turbo 4 better than a 350hp N55, and justify the price difference between a M2 4 cylinders, and an M235i 6 cylinders. They'd have to go crazy on lightweight material.

the same way they justified a 4 cylinder in the E30 M3 vs the E30 325 which had a 6 cylinder motor..
one was a great sports coupe... the other an oustanding sports car.. and yes.. a carbon roof, less sound deadening, lighter aluminum suspension parts would likely be the best ways to save weight along with some additional aero parts, better brakes (ala the 6 piston non M calipers on 128/135 vs M3 calipers on 1M) for better performance.
